Opening a wine list in Morgantown, West Virginia and finding Silver Oak, Frog's Leap, and Barnaut Champagne is not what you expect — and that's exactly the point. Café Bacchus is swinging for something well above its zip code, and for the most part it connects. The list feels curated with intention, not just populated to fill space.
About 105 labels anchored heavily in California, with strong Napa Cabernet representation from names like Honig, Elizabeth Spencer, Frog's Leap, and Paul Hobbs' Crossbarn. Oregon gets a seat at the table via Adelsheim's Willamette Pinot Noir, and there's a nod to France through Drouhin's Pouilly-Fuissé and a Barnaut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru. Argentina and New Zealand round out the international spread, though those regions feel more like a gesture than a commitment. If you came for deep Burgundy or Italian exploration, you'll leave a little hungry — but for a college town bistro, the California depth is genuinely impressive.
Nine pours by the glass at $8–$9 is a reasonable spread, and the price point is refreshingly accessible for the caliber of the list. The rotation appears static rather than adventurous — no visible program to cycle in new bottles or feature weekly pours. You'll likely get what you see, week after week, but what's there is decent enough to work with.
Adelsheim Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2013 — $50
Adelsheim is a reliable Oregon producer and Willamette Pinot at this price point beats paying Napa Cab markup all night. It's the quiet overachiever on this list.
Barnaut Champagne Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru N/V
Most people at this restaurant are ordering Cabernet. Barnaut is a small, family-run Champagne house most drinkers have never heard of, and a Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs for $75 in West Virginia is genuinely surprising. Order it before someone else figures it out.
Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2011
At $120 a bottle, you're paying full restaurant freight for a wine that's become more brand than bottle. Silver Oak is the Ugg boot of Napa Cab — fine, but the name is doing most of the work at this price.
Drouhin Pouilly Fuisse Burgundy 2014 + Cheese Board
Drouhin's Pouilly-Fuissé has the body and texture to stand up to rich, aged cheeses while its Burgundian acidity keeps things from getting heavy. It's the kind of pairing that makes a cheese board feel like an actual course.

Café Bacchus is doing something genuinely ambitious for Morgantown, and most of it works — just watch the markups on the big California names. If you're looking for a real wine experience in a city that doesn't offer many, this is where you go.
