Wingman Metrics
Walk in expecting a generic retail wine shop and instead find yourself staring down one of Maryland's most serious estate portfolios poured in a proper tasting room setting. Black Ankle has been quietly making some of the Mid-Atlantic's most compelling wines for years, and this Frederick outpost finally brings that to a downtown audience. The list is short, but it's not trying to be anything other than exactly what it is.
This is a single-producer list β full stop β so if you came looking for a Burgundy or a Napa cab, you're in the wrong room. What you get instead is a focused window into Black Ankle's estate in Mount Airy: their Chardonnay that punches well above Maryland's reputation, a Syrah that would surprise anyone who still thinks the Mid-Atlantic can't ripen reds, and the Crumbling Rock blend that's become something of a calling card for the region. The Passeggiata rounds things out as the approachable entry point, a lighter-bodied red that earns its place on the list. The gap here is obvious β zero diversity of producer or region β but that's a deliberate editorial choice, not laziness.
Somewhere in the range of six to ten pours on any given visit, rotating through the Black Ankle lineup with a sensible spread across whites, reds, and the occasional rosΓ© depending on the season. Glass prices run $12β$20, which is honest money for estate wine of this caliber from a producer with genuine critical respect. No gimmicks, no half-price nights β just the wines, poured properly.
Black Ankle Vineyards Passeggiata β $12
The most accessible price point in the lineup, but don't mistake approachable for simple. It's an easy-drinking red that gives you a genuine taste of what Black Ankle is doing without committing to the bigger bottles.
Black Ankle Vineyards Syrah
Most people walk past Maryland Syrah without a second glance, which is exactly why you should order it. Black Ankle's version is the kind of wine that makes you rethink the entire Mid-Atlantic category β cool-climate character, real structure, nothing apologetic about it.
Black Ankle Vineyards Chardonnay
It's a good wine β genuinely β but if you're new to Black Ankle, the Chardonnay is where most people start and it's also where the list feels most conventional. Get there eventually, but lead with the reds first.
Black Ankle Vineyards Crumbling Rock + Charcuterie board
Crumbling Rock is a structured, layered red blend built for the table β cured meats and hard cheeses let it breathe and show off the earthy, dark-fruited character that makes it the flagship for a reason.
π² The Bottom Line
If you've never had Black Ankle and you're anywhere near Frederick, this is the easiest yes we can give you β a rare chance to taste one of Maryland's genuinely great producers in a focused, unpretentious setting. The single-producer format is a limitation, but when the producer is this good, it barely matters.

Mayta's isn't a wine destination, but Wine Down Wednesday makes it a genuinely fun, affordable place to eat and drink well enough. Come for the Lomo Saltado, grab the Malbec at half price, and don't overthink it.

Miyako's wine list exists to check a box, and it does that β nothing more. Order the sake, order a cocktail, or make peace with a Canyon Road pour and focus on the hibachi show.

Downtown Frederick Β· Frederick Β· Mediterranean / Meze
Ayse is the kind of place that surprises you β a Frederick meze lounge with a genuinely considered Italian-leaning wine list that punches above its weight class, even if markups and a static program hold it back from true greatness. Send a friend here, but tell them to skip the Amarone and ask for the Moschofilero.

Bonefish Grill Frederick is a fine place to eat seafood, but the wine list is pure chain-restaurant autopilot β low risk, low reward, and no one in the kitchen or behind the bar is losing sleep over it. Order the Riesling at Social Hour, enjoy your salmon, and save the wine exploration for somewhere that's actually trying.

Carrabba's Frederick isn't a wine destination, but it's a chain that actually tried β Italian-leaning list, credible producers, food-friendly pours. Send your friend here if they want a decent Chianti with their pasta and don't want to think too hard about it.

Outback Frederick's wine list is a corporate checkbox, not a wine program β safe brands, steep pours, zero personality. Order the Malbec with your steak, or honestly, just get a beer.

Ladro is punching well above its weight for downtown Champaign β the markups sting, but Wednesday's half-price special practically solves that problem on its own. If you're a U of I regular and haven't discovered this place yet, fix that.

Hazel Jane's is the kind of wine bar Atlanta quietly needed β curious, approachable, and not afraid to put a grape you've never heard of front and center. If you're willing to let go of the wheel a little, this place will take you somewhere worth going.

Old Town Wine Cellar is the kind of place that makes you rethink what a small desert city can pull off β the list is genuinely deep, the prices are almost aggressively fair, and the Coravin program punches it up another level.
