The menu opens strong — 75 labels in Fresno, California is not something you expect to stumble into, and the sparkling-heavy front section signals that someone here has actual opinions. This isn't a wine list assembled by a corporate beverage director; it feels personal, even a little bold.
The real identity of Wine Bar 559 is in its bubbles — from a $52 Blanchard Perez Cava to a $420 Dom Ruinart 2010 and a $480 Dom Pérignon 2012, the sparkling section alone covers more ground than most full-service restaurants twice its size. The Franciacorta from Ca' del Bosco at $90 is a particularly sharp call — it's a category most American bars completely ignore. Rosé gets its own thoughtful runway, with Whispering Angel sitting alongside smaller producers like Carnival Pinot Noir Rosé and Sakura Petit Verdot Rosé, which shows some genuine curation. The white and red sections are less documented in what we've seen, but what's here suggests restraint rather than laziness.
Twenty-eight by-the-glass options is a serious number — that's not a wine list, that's a commitment. At $11–$25 a glass, the range is accessible without being embarrassing. The Gemma di Luna Moscato at $14/glass gives budget drinkers an easy entry point, while the program clearly skews toward sparkling and rosé pours for the glass-by-glass crowd.
Blanchard Perez Cava Brut — $52
Cava this good rarely clears $60 at a restaurant, and most places don't even bother stocking it. At $52 for a proper bottle of Spanish sparkling, this is the move for anyone who doesn't need the Champagne label to feel fancy.
Ca' del Bosco Brut Franciacorta
Most people walk past Franciacorta on a menu because they don't recognize the region. That's a mistake. Ca' del Bosco is one of Italy's top sparkling producers, making méthode traditionnelle wine that punches hard against mid-tier Champagne at $90 — a price that looks steep until you realize what you're actually getting.
Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut
At $115 a bottle, Veuve is what you order when you want the yellow label, not the wine. There are better bottles on this very list — Marie Forget Premier Cru at $125 or Alfred Gratien at $95 — that will drink circles around it. Veuve is fine; it's just the safe, boring choice when this list doesn't ask you to be safe.
Gerard Bertrand Cremant de Limoux + Charcuterie board
Cremant de Limoux is bright, dry, and has enough acidity to cut through cured meats and aged cheeses without the formality of Champagne. At $62 a bottle, it's the kind of easy, crowd-pleasing pour that makes a grazing board disappear fast.
The Bottom Line
Wine Bar 559 is doing something genuinely interesting in a city not known for its wine culture — a sparkling-forward list with real depth, fair pricing, and a by-the-glass program that doesn't insult you. If you're passing through Fresno or live there and haven't been, this is the kind of place that makes you reassess your assumptions.
