Wingman Metrics
BJ's is a brewery first, a pizza-and-Pizookie destination second, and a wine bar never. The wine list reads like the shelf at a gas station convenience store that upgraded to a grocery store — familiar retail brands, zero ambition. If you came here for wine, you made a wrong turn.
The list leans entirely on mass-market California brands you've seen in every supermarket endcap from here to Sacramento. Dark Horse, Apothic, Ecco Domani, Hess Select — these are not restaurant wines, they're grocery wines with a restaurant markup. There's no regional depth, no interesting producers, and no evidence that anyone curated this list with any intention beyond checking a box. If you're hoping for a Paso Robles Zin or a Central Coast Pinot, keep hoping.
By-the-glass options aren't published in detail, but given the producer lineup, expect the usual suspects poured in bulk. Rotation appears nonexistent — this list looks like it hasn't changed since the location opened. Don't expect anything poured with purpose.
Hess Select Chardonnay — null
It's the most credible producer on the list — Hess actually makes wine at their Mount Veeder estate and this entry-level tier is at least drinkable. Relative to its peers here, it's the least embarrassing white on the menu.
Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio
It's not exciting, but on a hot Chula Vista afternoon on the patio with a lighter dish, this crisp, low-stakes Pinot Grigio does the job without getting in the way. Nobody will be impressed, but nobody will be mad.
Apothic Red Winemaker's Blend
Apothic Red retails for around $8-10 a bottle. Whatever BJ's is charging per glass almost certainly makes this one of the worst value pours on the list. It's sweet, it's heavily processed, and you've had it before — probably from a grocery bag.
Dark Horse Cabernet + Deep Dish Pizza
Dark Horse Cab is bold enough to stand up to BJ's saucy, cheesy deep dish without overthinking it. This isn't a pairing you write home about, but it's honest — big pizza, big fruit-forward red, done.
❌ The Bottom Line
BJ's is a fine place to drink a craft beer and eat a Pizookie. It is not a place to drink wine. Order a Brewhouse Blonde, skip the wine list entirely, and save your wine night for somewhere that cares.
La Jolla / Torrey Pines · Chula Vista · Regional California Cuisine / American Fine Dining
A.R. Valentien is doing something rare for a hotel restaurant: it's built a wine program that would stand on its own even without the Pacific Ocean views. Send your people here — just book ahead and don't skip the wine list.

La Jolla · Chula Vista · Italian
Marisi is a reliable Italian wine list with genuine ambition hiding behind a steep markup structure — the producers are right, the regions are right, but you'll pay for the privilege. Go for the Produttori Barbaresco and the Pre-Phylloxera Barbera, and you'll leave satisfied.

Nine-Ten is a genuinely good restaurant with a competent wine program — the sommelier is present, the list is legitimate, and the setting earns the price of admission. But the markups are aggressive enough that you'll want to be selective, because this list can eat your wallet if you reach for the obvious names.

STK San Diego is a perfectly functional steakhouse wine list — it does exactly what it promises and absolutely nothing more. Come for the atmosphere and the beef, lean into happy hour if wine value matters to you, and don't show up expecting to be surprised.

Stake is the real deal — a 1,700-bottle list with genuine sommelier guidance and a kitchen that integrates wine into the experience rather than just selling it alongside. The pricing is steep, because this is Coronado and this is a serious steakhouse, but if you're already ordering a $75 Wagyu, the cellar absolutely earns its place at the table.

Callie is one of the most intentional wine programs in San Diego — curated, regionally coherent, and staffed by people who actually know what's in the cellar. The markups will cost you, but if you're going to spend, this is a list worth spending on.

Catablu is exactly what it needs to be for its neighborhood — a reliable, thoughtfully maintained list that won't embarrass you on a date night or bore you entirely. It's not a destination wine list, but it's a solid supporting act for a kitchen that clearly takes food seriously.

The Cheesecake Factory is a perfectly fine place to eat — the wine list just isn't a reason to go. Order a cocktail, split a bottle of Santa Margherita if you must, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that earned it.
