Wingman Metrics
Walking into Wayside Tavern on Munjoy Hill, you expect a neighborhood bar with a short, predictable wine list. What you get instead is a 60-100 bottle program with a clear European lean and someone on staff who actually knows what they're talking about. It's the kind of pleasant surprise that makes you want to sit down and order a second glass.
The list skews heavily Italian and French, which is exactly the kind of editorial commitment we respect — someone made choices here rather than just ordering a case of Meiomi and calling it a day. The Loire Valley gets proper representation, and the Italian selections go deeper than the usual Pinot Grigio-and-Chianti shorthand. At 60-100 bottles, this isn't a sprawling cellar, but the curation punches above its weight for a tavern setting. Gaps exist — don't expect Iberia or the Southern Hemisphere to show up — but what's here is coherent and purposeful.
Ten to sixteen by-the-glass options is a generous pour program for a neighborhood tavern, and the fact that sparkling makes the cut — both the Vices & Vertus Brut from the Loire and the Bisol Prosecco Rosé from Veneto — tells you the list has range beyond the standard red-white-rosé trifecta. We'd like to see more rotation to keep regulars on their toes, but the current selections hold up well.
Vices & Vertus 'Orgueil Brut' • Sèvre-et-Maine, Loire, France — null
A Muscadet-region sparkling from the Loire at a tavern in Maine is not something you see every day. Vices & Vertus makes honest, terroir-driven wines and 'Orgueil Brut' delivers real character — crisp, mineral, with genuine personality. Order it before anyone else at the table figures out what it is.
Vices & Vertus 'Orgueil Brut' • Sèvre-et-Maine, Loire
Most people's eyes will glide right past this to something more familiar. That's a mistake. Sèvre-et-Maine sparkling is one of the underdog categories of French wine — mineral-driven, food-friendly, and priced like nobody's noticed yet. It won't stay that way forever.
Bisol Prosecco Rosé • Veneto, Italy
Bisol is a solid producer and this is a perfectly fine wine, but Prosecco Rosé is the safe, crowd-pleasing order that exists on every list in America right now. With something as interesting as the Vices & Vertus Brut sitting right next to it, there's just no reason to default here.
Vices & Vertus 'Orgueil Brut' • Sèvre-et-Maine, Loire + Anything fried or shellfish-forward on the tavern menu
Loire sparkling and anything from the sea is one of the most reliable pairings in the book. The high acidity and mineral backbone cut through richness and make briny, oceanic flavors sing. In coastal Maine, this is basically a home-court advantage.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Wayside Tavern is the kind of place you recommend to wine-curious friends who don't want to feel like they're in a wine bar — there's genuine knowledge behind this list without any of the pretension. Come for dinner, stay for a second glass of something you didn't expect to find on Munjoy Hill.

Mr. Tuna isn't a wine destination — it's a great sushi spot that happens to have two sensible, well-chosen bottles and a local can that makes the experience feel intentional. Come for the hand rolls, drink the Vinho Verde, and don't overthink it.

Chaval is punching above its weight class for a neighborhood brasserie in Portland — the list is small but curated by someone who actually cares, with pricing that doesn't punish curiosity. If you're open to going off the beaten path (xarel-lo, South African grenache blanc), this is a genuinely rewarding room to drink in.
