RagingWine reviewed UMI Japanese Steak House’s wine list and gave it The Lazy List — RagingWine’s Vibe-Check rating. How RagingWine reviews wine lists →
Wingman Metrics
The wine list at UMI reads like the bottom shelf of a Kroger wine aisle got laminated and stapled to the dinner menu. Twenty options sounds like a reasonable start until you notice that roughly a third of them are Salmon Creek — a bulk-production label that retails for well under $10 a bottle. The prices are low, we'll give them that, but low prices on wine nobody actually wants isn't the win it looks like on paper.
The list breaks into four loose categories — house wines, whites, reds, and a nod to Asian flavors via Kikkoman Plum Wine — but the depth stops there. Salmon Creek dominates the house section across seven varieties, and the step-up options aren't much of a step: Blackstone Merlot, Barefoot Cellars minis, Oak Leaf Moscato. Clos du Bois Chardonnay and Relax Riesling represent the closest thing to a recognizable brand with a broader following. There are no Old World producers, no sparkling options, no rosé, and nothing that suggests anyone with serious wine interest curated this.
Every bottle on the list is also available by the glass, which sounds generous until you realize the full list is priced to function that way — the most expensive glass pour is $9 (Julia James Chardonnay). The inclusion of Barefoot 187ml single-serve bottles listed as glass pours is a creative accounting move, but pouring someone a mini-bottle and charging $6.50 for the experience is a choice. Rotation appears nonexistent; this list has the energy of something that hasn't changed since the restaurant opened.
The Bottom Line
UMI is a hibachi spot first, and the wine list makes that priority extremely clear — it's an afterthought dressed up with two columns and a laminator. The pricing is fair by the numbers, but fair prices on uninspiring wine only gets you so far. If you're here for the showmanship at the grill, order a Kikkoman Plum Wine and lean into it; if you care about what's in your glass, stick to whatever they're pouring on draft or start with cocktails.

If you're coming to The Italian Oven, come for the generous portions and old-school Italian comfort food — the Seafood Marinara and Spaghetti and Meatballs are the draw here, not the wine list. We can't confirm enough about the wine program to send anyone here specifically for a bottle, so order a cocktail or BYOB if that's an option, and save the wine night for somewhere that's earned it.

Serafino's wine list does exactly what it sets out to do: give a casual Italian-American dining room a frictionless, affordable wine experience. Prices are genuinely fair, every bottle is available by the glass, and the markup is reasonable across the board. Just don't come here expecting to geek out — if you want Sangiovese with your pasta, you're ordering water instead.

Sake is a Japanese steakhouse first and foremost, and the wine list makes that priority crystal clear — wine is an afterthought here. Order the sake, order a cocktail, or bring your own if corkage allows. The wine program offers nothing worth seeking out.

Ichiban's wine list is exactly what you'd expect at a solid suburban steak-and-sushi spot — recognizable producers, honest prices, and near-universal by-the-glass availability. It won't excite you, but it won't embarrass you either. If you're here for the food, the Alamos Malbec at $28 a bottle keeps things easy and affordable.

Spice and Sky's wine list is a low-effort placeholder — familiar brands, steep markups on accessible wines, and no apparent thought given to how wine interacts with an Asian kitchen. If you're here, start with the Bex Riesling for $9 and call it a night. For serious wine drinking, look elsewhere.
