Wingman Metrics
The Wine Kitchen feels like the kind of place that has its priorities straight on paper — a wine-forward name, a creekside setting in downtown Frederick, and a list that's longer than your average bistro. Flip open the menu and it's all very polished and approachable, which is exactly what the neighborhood is asking for. The problem is that 'approachable' and 'interesting' aren't always the same thing.
The list clocks in around 40-60 labels and leans hard on the recognizable: California workhorses, Spanish Rioja, Italian bubbles, and a few French nods to make it feel grown-up. Bodegas Muga and Louis Jadot show up and do give the list some credibility, but they're surrounded by Kim Crawford and La Marca — bottles you've already had at your cousin's wedding. There's a European mix here that suggests someone wanted to build something real, but the overall selection stops short of taking any actual risks. No natural wine, no regional deep cuts, nothing that makes you put your phone down and say 'wait, what is that.'
Fifteen to twenty options by the glass is genuinely impressive for a neighborhood spot this size, and that's where The Wine Kitchen earns some goodwill. The range covers bubbles through reds without leaving anyone stranded, and glass prices sitting between $10 and $18 are fair for the market. Rotation appears minimal — this feels like a static list rather than something that changes with the seasons.
Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva — $68
Yes, the markup stings at over 100% above retail, but Muga Reserva is genuinely the most serious wine on this list — structured Tempranillo with actual age-worthiness, not just a pretty label. If you're going to spend money here, spend it on the one bottle that rewards you.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
Most tables at a place like this will walk right past a Washington State Riesling without a second look. That's a mistake. Ste. Michelle's Columbia Valley Riesling is one of the most consistently over-delivering bottles in American wine, and at this price point it punches well above its weight — especially if you're eating something with any heat or richness.
Louis Jadot Bourgogne Pinot Noir
At $60 a bottle you're paying 173% over retail for an entry-level Burgundy that retails for $22. Louis Jadot Bourgogne is a fine weeknight wine — at home, from a shop. Here it's priced like something it fundamentally isn't, and there's no reason to foot that bill.
Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva + Steak Frites
Muga Reserva is built for red meat — the Tempranillo and Garnacha blend brings enough tannic grip and dark fruit to stand up to a properly cooked steak, while the oak integration smooths out the richness without overpowering it. This is the combination that makes the markup feel slightly more forgivable.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Wine Kitchen is a reliable neighborhood pour in a genuinely pleasant setting — just don't come expecting to be surprised. Send a friend here for a casual dinner by the creek, but tell them to skip the Jadot and maybe drink by the glass.

Miyako's wine list exists to check a box, and it does that — nothing more. Order the sake, order a cocktail, or make peace with a Canyon Road pour and focus on the hibachi show.

Downtown Frederick · Frederick · Mediterranean / Meze
Ayse is the kind of place that surprises you — a Frederick meze lounge with a genuinely considered Italian-leaning wine list that punches above its weight class, even if markups and a static program hold it back from true greatness. Send a friend here, but tell them to skip the Amarone and ask for the Moschofilero.

Route 85 retail corridor · Frederick · Seafood / Grill
Bonefish Grill Frederick is a fine place to eat seafood, but the wine list is pure chain-restaurant autopilot — low risk, low reward, and no one in the kitchen or behind the bar is losing sleep over it. Order the Riesling at Social Hour, enjoy your salmon, and save the wine exploration for somewhere that's actually trying.

Carrabba's Frederick isn't a wine destination, but it's a chain that actually tried — Italian-leaning list, credible producers, food-friendly pours. Send your friend here if they want a decent Chianti with their pasta and don't want to think too hard about it.

Outback Frederick's wine list is a corporate checkbox, not a wine program — safe brands, steep pours, zero personality. Order the Malbec with your steak, or honestly, just get a beer.

LongHorn is here to sell you a steak, and it does that job well enough — but the wine list is an afterthought at best. Order the beef, skip the wine, and save the bottle for somewhere that actually cares.
