Wingman Metrics
The Sole Proprietor has been a Worcester institution for decades, and the wine list reads exactly like that: confident, comfortable, and not trying to surprise anyone. At 115 labels, it's a real list — but flip through it and you'll notice it leans hard on the Napa Valley greatest hits parade. That's not necessarily bad; it just tells you who this place is for.
The list is dominated by California heavyweights — Opus One, Joseph Phelps Insignia, Shafer Hillside Select, Caymus Special Selection, Silver Oak — the kind of lineup that plays well in a classic steakhouse-adjacent seafood room. There's some nuance if you look for it: DuMol's Wester Reach Pinot from Russian River and Wayfarer's Fort Ross Chardonnay show someone on staff has at least a passing interest in terroir-driven California. But if you're hunting for Burgundy depth, Iberian exploration, or anything natural, you're going to be disappointed — this list essentially stops at the Pacific Coast. International representation exists but feels like an afterthought.
Thirty-one by-the-glass options is genuinely impressive for a Worcester seafood spot and gives you real room to explore. The price window of $11–$21 per glass is reasonable for the market, though we'd want to know more about what's rotating versus what's been sitting open in a speed rack for three days. For a seafood-forward menu, we'd steer toward whatever white or sparkling is freshest — ask your server when the bottle was opened.
Far Niente Chardonnay, Napa Valley, 2023 — $68
Far Niente consistently punches above its weight for California Chardonnay — rich but not overblown, with enough acidity to handle a lobster or raw bar spread. At $68, it's one of the few bottles on this list where the markup feels like it's not trying to pick your pocket.
DuMol Estate 'Wester Reach' Pinot Noir, Russian River, 2021
Most tables at The Sole Proprietor are going to reach for a big Napa Cab or a safe Chardonnay. Don't. DuMol's Wester Reach is a legitimately serious Russian River Pinot from one of the appellation's best producers — earthy, precise, and actually interesting with seafood in a way that Caymus simply isn't.
Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut NV
At $115 a bottle, you're paying a significant premium for a label that retails in the $50–$60 range everywhere. Veuve Yellow Label is fine Champagne, but at that markup it's a trophy pour, not a value play — and in a restaurant that leans this heavily on the classics, there are better places to spend that money.
Wayfarer Chardonnay, Fort Ross, Sonoma County, 2021 + Fresh oysters from the raw bar
Wayfarer's Fort Ross site sits right on the Sonoma Coast, practically breathing the same cold Pacific air as the oysters on your plate. The wine has the saline minerality and bright acidity to cut through the brine without steamrolling the delicate flavor of a fresh oyster — it's the kind of pairing that actually makes sense, not just sounds good on paper.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Sole Proprietor is a reliable, crowd-pleasing list that does exactly what a classic seafood institution should — it just won't thrill anyone looking for adventure or a fair deal on the big names. Order the oysters, pick the DuMol, and leave the Opus One for someone else's expense account.

Willy's delivers a competent, crowd-friendly wine list that matches its supper-club DNA — no one's going home disappointed, but no one's going home inspired either. If you're in Worcester and want a solid glass with a prime steak, it does the job; just don't come here for the wine list.

111 Chop House Bar is doing exactly what it set out to do — give Worcester a place to order trophy Napa bottles alongside a prime cut. The markups sting and the list won't surprise anyone, but if you know what you're looking for, you'll find it.

Vejigante isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — and for a vibrant Puerto Rican restaurant in downtown Worcester, the list is more thoughtful than you'd expect. Grab the Riesling, enjoy the mofongo, and don't overthink it.
