The Punchdown lands like a dispatch from a better-informed version of the wine world — 150-plus bottles on the list, a relaxed room in Uptown Oakland, and zero pretension about any of it. You're not walking into a hushed temple of fine wine; you're walking into a neighborhood spot that just happens to know exactly what's happening in Abruzzo and the Caucasus right now. The vibe says casual; the list says otherwise.
This is a genuinely committed natural wine program, not a trend-chasing one. Broc Cellars and Ryme Cellars anchor the California contingent with credibility, while the French section pulls proper Beaujolais crus and Loire pét-nats rather than leaning on Provence rosé as a crutch. The Italian producers from Sicily and Abruzzo feel curated rather than random, and the inclusion of skin-contact whites from Georgia — the country — and Friuli signals a list built by people who actually drink this stuff. Gaps exist: if you want classified Bordeaux or Napa Cab, you're at the wrong bar, and that's a feature, not a bug.
Twenty-five-plus options by the glass is an unusually generous pour program, and the $12–$20 range keeps things accessible without bottoming out on quality. Expect the list to shift as allocations come and go — this isn't a static pour menu, which means the staff actually has to know what's in the glass, and by most accounts, they do.
Beaujolais Cru — $14
Beaujolais cru by the glass in the mid-teens is a straight steal — you're getting serious Gamay from named villages, not Nouveau, and it drinks like something that costs significantly more on most restaurant lists.
Georgian Skin-Contact White
Most people walk past anything labeled 'skin-contact from Georgia' and order something safer. Don't. These amber wines are some of the most texturally interesting pours on the list and The Punchdown carries them with enough context that the staff can actually explain what you're drinking.
Loire Pét-Nat
Pét-nat is pét-nat — fun, fizzy, and often priced above its station. If you're watching the tab, this is the easiest place to overpay for something that's more about the mood than the wine. Spend the same money on a glass of Beaujolais cru instead.
Ryme Cellars White + Conservas plate
Ryme Cellars makes structured, mineral-driven whites that cut straight through the salt and oil of tinned seafood. It's a classic textbook match — briny fish, crisp white — but with producers this good, the textbook gets it right.
