Wingman Metrics
Thirteen bottles. That's the whole list. But before you close the menu, take a closer look — this is not a list assembled by someone who just called their distributor's rep and said yes to everything. Alkali Rye has clearly done some hunting.
For a tasting room running a baker's dozen of wines, the range here is genuinely surprising: a sparkling co-ferment from Heya, a Lambrusco from Podere il Saliceto out of Emilia-Romagna, an Australian Vermentino from Delinquente, a Portuguese white from Márcio Lopes, a Spanish Rioja Blanco, and a port-style from Khemia. Broc Cellars shows up three times — including two canned options — which tracks for an Oakland natural-leaning spot but does tip the list a little local-heavy. The gaps are real: no reds beyond the Broc Got Grapes blend and the Lambrusco, and no Burgundy, Rhône, or Italian white to speak of. What they've chosen, though, they've chosen with intention.
We don't have confirmed glass pour data, but given the shop format and price points — most bottles topping out at $35 — it's reasonable to expect some pour options. The Broc Love cans at $12 are effectively their by-the-glass program, and honestly, they're a smart move: low commitment, fun drinking, no waste.
Hobo Wines Banyan Gewürztraminer — $20
Twenty bucks for a well-made Gewürztraminer is already a good deal, and Hobo's Banyan bottling consistently punches above its weight. Aromatic, food-friendly, and approachable for people who don't normally gravitate to the grape — it's the sleeper hit of this list.
Podere il Saliceto "Falistra" Lambrusco di Sobrara
Most people hear Lambrusco and think grocery store fizzy red. Podere il Saliceto makes the real thing — dry, earthy, a little funky, with actual complexity. At $35 it's the priciest bottle on the list, but it's also the most serious wine here by a mile. Don't sleep on it.
Ami Ami Ami Ami Vin Blanc
At $26, the Ami Ami Vin Blanc isn't egregiously priced, but with the Márcio Lopes Vinho Branco sitting at $23 and the Hobo Gewürztraminer at $20, there are stronger, more interesting choices at lower prices on this same list. Unless you're specifically chasing this label, your money works harder elsewhere.
Delinquente Wine Co "Screaming Betty" Vermentino + Charcuterie or snack board
Alkali Rye is a tasting room, so a snack board is the logical food play. The Screaming Betty Vermentino — bright, saline, and a little textured — is exactly what you want cutting through cured meats and cheese. It's built for this kind of drinking.
The Bottom Line
Alkali Rye is a twelve-hundred-square-foot argument that you don't need a long list to have a good list. If you're into natural wine, funky imports, and paying Oakland prices instead of San Francisco ones, this place is worth your time.
