Walking into Paul Marcus Wines, the list reads like a love letter to regions most wine shops treat as afterthoughts — Bandol, Barbaresco, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, Vinho Verde, Beirut rosé. This isn't a place stocking safe crowd-pleasers for the dinner party crowd; this is a shop run by people who actually drink this stuff and want you to as well. The 63-label selection is tighter than a big-box retailer but every slot earns its keep.
Italy is the obvious backbone here — you get multiple Chianti Classico Gran Selezioni (Castello di Ama, Le Cinciole, Terreno), a Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia, a Giuseppe Nada Barbaresco Marcarini, and a Flavio Roddolo Dolcetto that proves they're not just chasing prestige names. France shows up with real intent too: Guy Bocard Meursault VV, Domaine Tempier Bandol Blanc, Hure Freres Champagne, and the wildly underrated Prieure Saint-Jean de Bebian Blanc from Languedoc. There's genuine global range in the supporting cast — Château Musar Rosé from Lebanon, a Quinta do Ermizio Vinho Verde, AT Roca Cava, and Arnot-Roberts California Rosé keeping the domestic flag flying. The gaps are minor: South America is light and the Rhône is largely absent, but that's a nitpick on a list this intentional.
Paul Marcus operates primarily as a retail shop, so a formal by-the-glass program in the traditional restaurant sense isn't really the model here. That said, the shop runs tastings and staff picks with seasonal rotations, meaning what's open and pourable shifts with the calendar and whoever's working that week. If you show up during a tasting event, you're in luck — this crew opens good stuff.
AT Roca Reserva Rosat Cava 2023 — $50
Cava at this quality level — Reserva designation, proper disgorgement, real complexity — is chronically underpriced relative to Champagne. Roca's rosé version punches well above its weight and most people walk right past it for the French stuff.
Amorotti Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo 2022
Cerasuolo gets slept on constantly. It's not just a rosé — it's a serious, copper-hued expression of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo with the structure to handle a real meal. Amorotti makes one of the best versions around, and most customers don't even know the category exists.
Domaine Tempier Bandol Blanc 2024 + Oysters or fresh shellfish from a nearby seafood counter
Tempier's white Bandol — mostly Clairette and Marsanne — has the saline minerality and weight to stand up to briny shellfish without steamrolling it. Pick up a bottle and head to the Ferry Building. You're welcome.
The Bottom Line
Paul Marcus Wines is the kind of neighborhood shop that makes you mad you don't live closer to it — deeply curated, genuinely knowledgeable, and stocked with bottles that reward curiosity over brand recognition. If you care about drinking well without being lectured, this is your place.

The Fat Lady isn't where you go to geek out on wine, but it's a genuinely enjoyable neighborhood classic with a historic Jack London Square room and a Wednesday half-price bottle deal that makes the steep markups a lot easier to swallow. Go on a Wednesday, spring for the Rombauer, and enjoy the patio.
