You're eating inside a literal Victorian castle — turrets, stone walls, candlelight — so the bar for atmosphere is already cleared before you even open the wine list. The list itself is shorter than you'd hope for a place charging fine dining prices, and it leans hard into Henderson Castle's own house label. That self-referential focus is either charming or limiting, depending on your patience for estate pours.
The list orbits around Henderson Castle's own winery production: a Meritage-style red blend, a straightforward red, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, and Riesling — all wearing the house label. Michigan wine tourism is a real thing, and leaning into local production makes sense for the brand, but when your own wines dominate a 50-to-100-bottle list, you've effectively handed yourself a captive audience rather than built a compelling program. There's no evidence of serious depth in Burgundy, Rhône, or even Napa to complement the steak-forward menu. If you're here for a ribeye and want something with real grip and structure behind it, the list may leave you reaching for the cocktail menu instead.
The by-the-glass program runs 8 to 16 options, which is a reasonable spread for a property this size, but those pours are anchored heavily by Henderson Castle's own labels. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority — this feels like a set-and-forget program that refreshes with seasons at best. If you're open to drinking local Michigan wine with your steak, fine; if you came expecting a rotating glass program with something interesting from Alsace or the Finger Lakes, recalibrate.
Henderson Castle Riesling — null
Michigan Riesling is one of the state's genuine strengths — the climate around Lake Michigan produces aromatic, food-friendly versions with real acidity. If the house Riesling reflects that tradition even modestly, it's likely the most honest expression of place on the list and the glass most likely to overdeliver relative to the steep markups elsewhere.
Henderson Castle Meritage
Most guests here order whatever red sounds familiar and move on, but the Meritage blend is worth a second look. A Bordeaux-style red blend gives the kitchen something to work with against the chop house menu, and house-produced blends at historic Michigan properties sometimes punch above their label. It's the most ambitious wine they make — worth the gamble.
Henderson Castle Merlot
A single-varietal Merlot at fine dining markups in a castle restaurant is almost always the trap door on a list like this. It's the path of least resistance for the kitchen to stock and the easiest upsell at the table, but you're almost certainly overpaying for something that competes with bottles half the price at your local shop. Order the Meritage if you want red, skip the Merlot.
Henderson Castle Meritage + H Prime Chop House Steak
A Bordeaux-style red blend was built for exactly this situation — red meat, rich sauces, a formal dining room. The structure and dark fruit in a Meritage hold up against the fat and char of a well-cooked chop better than any of the single-varietal house options. It's the most logical match on the menu, and it keeps your dollars in the local wine economy while you eat in a castle, which is honestly a solid Friday night.

The Henderson Castle is a genuinely spectacular place to have dinner, and the wine list is its most underwhelming feature. Go for the atmosphere and the steaks, drink the Riesling or the Meritage, and don't come here expecting a deep cellar — there's a literal wine cave on the property but the list doesn't fully live up to the theater of it.
