Wingman Metrics
You're on a rooftop. On a castle. In Kalamazoo. The wine list is almost beside the point for a second β until you realize every bottle on it comes from the castle's own winery, and suddenly this place has a very specific identity it's fully committing to. It's quirky, it's local, and it earns points for consistency even if it sacrifices range.
The entire list leans hard into Henderson Castle's estate wines β Meritage, a red blend, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, and Riesling β which makes this less of a wine list and more of a tasting menu with a view. There's no Burgundy hunt here, no obscure Txakoli moment waiting to happen. What you get is a tight, single-producer program that lives or dies by the quality of the estate's output. Michigan wine has earned genuine respect in recent years, particularly with white varieties and cool-climate reds, so this isn't a throwaway play β but guests hoping to explore beyond the castle's own barrels will hit a wall fast.
With somewhere between six and twelve pours on offer, the glass program covers the full estate range, which means you can work your way through the Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, and both red blends without committing to a bottle. That's actually a solid setup for a rooftop lounge crowd that's more likely ordering rounds than decanting. Rotation appears minimal β this reads as a static list tied to whatever the estate is producing.
Henderson Castle Riesling β null
Michigan Riesling is genuinely one of the state's strongest suits β the climate around the Great Lakes mirrors parts of Alsace more than people expect. If the estate is doing this variety any justice at all, it's the smartest pour on the menu and the one most likely to over-deliver for the setting.
Henderson Castle Meritage
Most people on a rooftop lounge aren't reaching for a Meritage β it sounds serious, they want something easy. But a Bordeaux-style blend from a Michigan estate that's clearly invested in its own program is worth the gamble, especially if you're there for more than one glass.
Henderson Castle Merlot
Standalone Merlot at a single-estate program at $$$ pricing is the hardest sell on this list. Unless the estate really nails it, you're paying a rooftop premium for a varietal that's already fighting an uphill reputation battle β and the Meritage likely does everything this does and more.
Henderson Castle Pinot Grigio + Castle kitchen small plates
Light, crisp, and low-friction β a Pinot Grigio works as the default rooftop pour against bar snacks and small bites without demanding anything from you. When the view is doing half the work, you want a wine that stays out of the way.
π² The Bottom Line
Henderson Castle Rooftop Lounge is a Wild Card through and through β you're not coming here for list depth, you're coming because it's a castle rooftop in Michigan with estate wines poured under open sky, and that's a legitimate reason. Just set your expectations accordingly: this is a vibe destination with a house wine program, not a destination wine bar.
West Main Hill Β· Kalamazoo Β· Steakhouse / American Fine Dining
The Henderson Castle is a genuinely spectacular place to have dinner, and the wine list is its most underwhelming feature. Go for the atmosphere and the steaks, drink the Riesling or the Meritage, and don't come here expecting a deep cellar β there's a literal wine cave on the property but the list doesn't fully live up to the theater of it.

Zooroona isn't a wine destination, but it's doing something smarter than most casual spots in its category β leaning into Lebanese producers to match its food. If you're here for shawarma and mezze, order the Massaya or the Musar Jeune and don't overthink it.

Principle isn't a wine destination, but it's a wine list that clearly had some thought put into it β a rare thing for a cocktail-first downtown spot. Send a curious friend here and tell them to order the orange wine.

Brick and Brine is doing more with a hotel wine list than most restaurants in its category bother to attempt β there's genuine range here and a few wines worth getting excited about. The markups are real and the California-heavy tilt won't surprise anyone, but if you know where to look, you can drink well.
