The wine list at The Goat Murfreesboro is eight bottles long — and six of them are Proverb, a budget grocery-store brand you've definitely walked past at Kroger. The whole thing reads like someone filled out a wine order form in under four minutes. Credit where it's due: prices are reasonable, but reasonable pricing on uninspiring wine is a low bar to clear.
Six of the eight labels are Proverb — Cabernet, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Riesling slot that actually gets swapped for Chateau Ste. Michelle, the one moment of mild competence on this list. There's no regional exploration, no Old World presence, no anything that suggests anyone thought about wine drinkers beyond 'cover the basics.' The Bakkanaali at $65 sticks out like a sore thumb — a Finnish red that's genuinely interesting in the wrong context, sitting next to a wall of $26 grocery-store pours. There are no gaps in the list so much as the list itself is a gap.
All eight bottles are available by the glass, which sounds generous until you realize it just means every Proverb varietal is technically a glass option. The Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling is the only pour here worth requesting by name. Rotation appears nonexistent — this list looks like it hasn't moved since the menu printed.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling — $26
At the same bottle price as the Proverb lineup, the Ste. Michelle is in a different league — a Washington state producer with actual track record and a Riesling that delivers real character. It's the only pick on this list that earns its place.
Bakkanaali Bakkanaali
At $65 it's an outlier in every sense — a Finnish wine in a Tennessee bar and grill is genuinely unexpected. We have no idea how it got here or why, but if you're curious and flush, it's the only selection on this list with a story.
Proverb Pinot Noir
Proverb Pinot Noir is what happens when 'Pinot Noir' is treated as a checkbox. It's thin, forgettable, and available at your grocery store for less than what you'll pay here by the glass. Order a beer.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling + Goat Burger
The Riesling's off-dry character and bright acidity cut through a big, sauced-up burger in a way no Proverb Cab ever will. It's the one pairing on this list that actually makes sense.
The Bottom Line
The Goat is a bar and grill, and the wine list knows it — this is an afterthought program dressed up with a price sheet. Stick to the Ste. Michelle Riesling or the Bakkanaali if you're feeling adventurous, and let the beer list do the heavy lifting.
