Wingman Metrics
A dedicated Champagne lounge in suburban Indiana — yes, really. The list is tight at 36 labels, but the intent is clear: this place wants to be your sparkling wine destination, not a catch-all dining room afterthought. Walking in here expecting a generic steakhouse wine list would be the wrong move entirely.
The Champagne backbone is genuinely solid — Billecart-Salmon, Bollinger, Drappier, Collet, Duval-Leroy, and a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal 2016 at $550 for when someone's celebrating a life event. The non-Champagne section is thin and a bit random: Belle Glos and DeLoach Pinot Noirs, Dominus Estate at $390, and a couple of Cabernets that feel like they wandered in from a different restaurant. The real story here is Champagne depth across styles — blanc de blancs, rosé, brut, demi-sec adjacent with the Veuve Clicquot Rich — which is more range than most full-service restaurants bother with. The gaps are predictable: no Grower Champagnes, no vintage variety beyond Cristal, and the red wine section reads like a last-minute addition to appease non-bubbly drinkers.
Twenty-three by-the-glass options is an ambitious pour program, and the range covers Champagne styles well — from the entry-level Devaux Brut Grand Reserve at $15/glass up to Veuve Clicquot Rich Rosé at $34/glass and Bollinger Special Cuvée at $32/glass. It's genuinely rare to find this many bubbles available by the glass in one place, especially outside a major city, and that deserves credit. The red and still wine by-the-glass options are functional at best — DeLoach Pinot Noir at $12/glass is the affordable fallback for anyone who's done with bubbles.
The Bottom Line
The Champagne Society is doing something genuinely unusual for Carmel, Indiana, and the Champagne-focused list has enough depth and by-the-glass variety to make it worth a stop. Markups lean steep across the board — you're paying for the concept and the curation — but if you want to explore Champagne styles without flying to France, this is a better option than it has any right to be in a strip mall suburb. Stick to the Champagne, skip the reds, and let Devaux or Drappier do the work.
City Center · Carmel · Seafood & Steak
Salt is a reliable date-night option in Carmel's City Center — the wine list won't blow your mind, but it won't ruin your evening either. If you're here for the Chilean sea bass and a bottle of something from the French or California section, you'll leave happy enough.

Freeland's is doing something genuinely interesting with wine in a suburb that doesn't require it of them — and the pricing is fair enough that you should take advantage. Send your friends here; just make sure they order off the middle of the list, not the top.

Grille 39 is fine — and fine is the ceiling. If you're staying at the hotel and don't want to drive anywhere, the wine list will get you through dinner without incident. Just don't go out of your way for it.

Northwest Carmel · Carmel · Upscale Italian
Convivio is a reliable wine destination for Northwest Carmel — the Italian focus is coherent, the top-tier bottles are legitimate, and it'll satisfy most tables without complaint. The markups sting a bit and the list plays it too safe to earn a higher badge, but if you're in the neighborhood and want a proper bottle with dinner, you won't leave disappointed.

Aberdeen Social House is doing more with its wine list than the address or the concept would lead you to believe, and Rootstock's global curation keeps it from feeling like an afterthought. Not a destination wine program yet, but a genuinely solid call for the north side of Indy.

Café Patachou is a genuinely good café that simply doesn't care about wine — and that's fine, because neither does most of its lunch crowd. Come for the French toast, grab a Ramona if you need bubbles, and don't come here expecting anything resembling a wine program.
