Eighty-four labels in Carmel, Indiana is not what we expected to find. The list reads like someone with actual taste built it — sparkling options from Champagne, Crémant, Cava, and Prosecco before you even get to the whites, and the prices don't immediately make you wince. This is not a list that was assembled by the restaurant's cousin who 'likes wine.'
The white wine section alone earns serious respect: a 2017 Nivarius White Rioja 'Edicion Limitada' sitting alongside a Pala 'Soprasole' Vermentino from Sardinia signals that whoever curated this list was deliberately reaching past the obvious. The Italian section has range — Attems Pinot Grigio for the crowd, Tonnino Ramato for the curious, Tenuta Delle Terre Nere Etna Rosato for anyone paying attention. On the red side, Turley Old Vine Zinfandel and Grgich Hills Merlot anchor California well, and Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir is a smart, honest pick. The gaps are on the Old World red side — we'd love to see some Burgundy, Rhône, or even an Italian red beyond what we can infer — but what's here is genuinely well-chosen.
Twenty-seven by-the-glass options is a serious commitment, and at $10–$20 a pour, the pricing is refreshingly sane for a tasting menu-format restaurant. The sparkling BTG alone offers multiple entry points, which tells you this kitchen expects people to start with bubbles and stay curious throughout the meal.
Marques De Cáceres Verdejo 2023 — $46
Verdejo from Rueda at $46 is a steal in a restaurant setting. Crisp, herbaceous, and food-friendly without demanding your attention — this is the bottle you order when you want quality without a conversation about it.
Nivarius White Rioja 'Edicion Limitada' 2017
A 2017 white Rioja on a restaurant list in Indiana is genuinely surprising. Tempranillo Blanco with age on it, from a region most people associate only with red wine — this is the bottle that rewards the curious and baffles everyone else at the table in the best possible way.
Champagne Philippe Gonet Brut Prestige Côte Des Blancs
At $110, this is the most expensive bottle on the sparkling section, and while Gonet is a solid grower, you can drink better Champagne for that spend. The Roederer Estate at $70 gives you more pleasure per dollar if you're just looking for bubbles.
Tenuta Delle Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2024 + Tasting menu seafood course
Etna Rosato from Terre Nere is one of the most food-flexible wines on the planet — volcanic minerality, bright acidity, and enough structure to handle anything the kitchen sends out. It bridges the gap between a white and a light red, which makes it ideal mid-tasting-menu when you're not sure what's coming next.
The Bottom Line
Freeland's is doing something genuinely interesting with wine in a suburb that doesn't require it of them — and the pricing is fair enough that you should take advantage. Send your friends here; just make sure they order off the middle of the list, not the top.

Grille 39 is fine — and fine is the ceiling. If you're staying at the hotel and don't want to drive anywhere, the wine list will get you through dinner without incident. Just don't go out of your way for it.

Convivio is a reliable wine destination for Northwest Carmel — the Italian focus is coherent, the top-tier bottles are legitimate, and it'll satisfy most tables without complaint. The markups sting a bit and the list plays it too safe to earn a higher badge, but if you're in the neighborhood and want a proper bottle with dinner, you won't leave disappointed.

Aberdeen Social House is doing more with its wine list than the address or the concept would lead you to believe, and Rootstock's global curation keeps it from feeling like an afterthought. Not a destination wine program yet, but a genuinely solid call for the north side of Indy.
