You're in Evanston, Illinois — not exactly the first place you'd expect to find Espérance de Trotanoy sitting next to Foillard Morgon and Cavallotto Barolo. The list reads like someone with a genuine point of view curated it, not a beverage director checking boxes. Sixty-one labels doesn't sound like much until you see what those sixty-one labels actually are.
The backbone here is unambiguously French — a tight but impressive run through Bordeaux (five appellations, all serious châteaux), Beaujolais crus, Burgundy from names like Joseph Voillot and Jacques Girardin, Rhône representation from Cornas to Crozes-Hermitage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and a Loire outlier in Bernard Baudry's Chinon. Italy gets a respectable nod — Produttori del Barbaresco and Cavallotto Barolo do most of the heavy lifting, with Volpaia's Chianti Classico Riserva filling the mid-range. Spain, South America, and the US round things out on paper, but this list's soul is clearly Franco-Italian old-world, and it doesn't try to be something it isn't. The gaps are real — no white wine depth was evidenced here, and by-the-glass details are thin — but what's present punches well above a suburban New American's weight class.
We couldn't confirm specific by-the-glass options or how many pours rotate, which is frustrating on a list this interesting. If the glass program reflects even half the ambition of the bottle list, it's worth asking your server what's open. Don't just default to whatever they push first.
Domaine Peillot Pugey 2020 — $42
The cheapest bottle on the list is a Bugey — an underdog appellation in the French Alps that most people walk right past. Peillot is the real deal, and $42 for a legit Savoy producer is the kind of entry point that makes you feel smart.
Domaine Les Goubert Beaumes de Venise 2023
Most people hear Beaumes de Venise and think dessert Muscat. This is the dry red — a Grenache-dominant Rhône village wine that flies under the radar. At $45, it's almost as cheap as the Peillot and it's got serious Southern Rhône character without the Châteauneuf price tag.
Château Prieuré-Lichine Margaux 2016
At $155, it's not highway robbery, but Prieuré-Lichine is a fourth growth that consistently trades on its Margaux address more than what's in the glass. With the Pomerol and Pauillac options at similar prices, this is the least exciting Bordeaux on the board.
Domaine Vincent Paris Granit 30, Cornas 2021 + Grilled red meat or duck entrée
Cornas is Syrah at its most brooding — all smoke, dark fruit, and iron — and Vincent Paris's Granit 30 is one of the appellation's most approachable expressions of that. It wants something rich and savory off the grill. At $95, it's the move for anyone who would otherwise default to a $150 Bordeaux.
The Bottom Line
The Alcove is doing something quietly ambitious with its wine list in a market where most New American spots phone it in. If you're north of Chicago and craving a proper bottle of Burgundy or Rhône without driving downtown, this is your spot.

Lush is doing something genuinely unusual in the Chicago suburbs: stocking a 382-label list heavy on oxidative wines, meads, and fortified pours that you won't find at 95% of restaurants in any city. The pricing is honest and the by-the-glass program is serious. If your dinner companion is game to let you order something they've never heard of, this is exactly the right room for it.
