Nine bottles isn't a wine list β it's a wine suggestion. But at ThaiPop, that tight curation lands with more intention than you'd expect from a lively downtown Thai spot better known for its cocktails and plant-filled vibe. The range skews light and aromatic, which actually makes sense given what's on the food menu.
For a 9-label list, there's some real thought here. The picks lean toward food-friendly, lower-tannin styles β a Lambrusco, a Vinho Verde, a Riesling, a Cinsault RosΓ© β that can hold their own against chili heat and coconut without getting steamrolled. The token Bordeaux Blanc and two Brea bottlings round it out with some California representation. What you won't find: anything Old World and serious, any sparkling beyond the Moscato and Lambrusco, or a single bottle above $67. The gaps are real, but the list isn't trying to be something it's not.
Every bottle on the list is also available by the glass, which is either a feature or an admission that nobody's ordering bottles β we'll call it a feature. Prices run $11β$18 a glass, which is reasonable for downtown Rochester in 2024. There's reportedly a happy hour deal with half-off house wine pours, though the specific day isn't nailed down.
Broadbent Vinho Verde β $11
Vinho Verde is built for exactly this kind of food β high acid, low alcohol, slight effervescence that scrubs the palate between bites of curry. At the low end of the glass price range, this is the move if you're ordering anything with heat.
L'Agnostique Cinsault RosΓ©
Most people scroll past rosΓ© on a Thai restaurant wine list and order a cocktail. Don't. Cinsault-based rosΓ© from the south of France is dry, bright, and has enough body to stand up to a green curry without turning into a flavor casualty. It's the sleeper pick on this list.
Fat Bastard Cabernet Sauvignon
The name is the tell. This is a grocery store shelf staple that punches well below the price you'll pay for it in a restaurant. A tannic, fruit-bomb Cab is also the hardest possible wine to match with Thai food. Pass.
Clean Slate Riesling + Khao Soi
Off-dry German Riesling is practically engineered to work with coconut-based curry broths. The residual sugar tempers the chili, the acidity cuts through the richness of the coconut milk, and the stone fruit notes don't fight the turmeric. This is the pairing ThaiPop's list is quietly set up for.
Unknown β ThaiPop's Instagram indicates happy hour includes half-off house wine by the glass, but the specific day has not been confirmed.
π² The Bottom Line
ThaiPop isn't a wine destination, but its list is smarter than the size suggests β just stick to the aromatic, low-tannin options and leave the Cab to someone else. If you're in downtown Rochester and want Thai food with a decent glass of something cold and food-friendly, you won't be disappointed.
Northwest / 55th Street Β· Rochester Β· Italian-American
Olive Garden's wine list exists to check a box, not elevate a meal β it's priced above its station and assembled without much curiosity. Order the Chianti, eat the breadsticks, and don't come here expecting the wine to be the point.

Apache Mall Β· Rochester Β· American
The Cheesecake Factory's wine list is exactly what you'd expect from a high-volume mall chain: safe, recognizable, and marked up enough to make you wish you'd ordered a cocktail. Come for the Chicken Madeira, skip the wine hunt.

CRAVE isn't a wine destination, but it's a perfectly competent place to drink on a Monday when those bottle prices get cut in half. Show up any other night and you're paying full markup on a list that doesn't earn it.

South / near Hwy 63 Β· Rochester Β· Casual American bar & grill
Ground Round is a solid spot for a burger and a beer β lean into that and don't look at the wine list. If someone at your table insists on wine, point them toward the Kim Crawford and move on.

South Β· Rochester Β· American bar and grill, burgers
Newt's South is not a wine destination β it's a great burger bar that happens to sell wine at suspiciously cheap prices. Come for the food, order a beer, and if you must have wine, hit it on a Wednesday when the glasses drop to under four bucks.

Five West is a perfectly competent neighborhood spot where the wine list does its job without embarrassing anyone. Don't come here chasing something rare β come for the patio, order The Beach RosΓ©, and call it a win.

Thai Orchid isn't a wine destination and doesn't try to be β but the pricing is honest, the Riesling is the right call, and the glass count gives you enough to work with. Order the Riesling, skip the Cab, enjoy your curry.

Royal Orchid makes solid Thai food, and you should absolutely go β just order a Thai iced tea or a beer and pretend the wine list doesn't exist. If someone at your table insists on wine, point them to the Riesling and move on.

Teton Village Β· Jackson Hole Β· Thai
Teton Thai is a legitimately good spot for Thai food at altitude β the wine list is just along for the ride, not the reason you're here. Order the Populis red, avoid the Oyster Bay, and save the serious wine drinking for somewhere that cares.
