Breadsticks Win. The Wine Does Not.

Wingman Metrics
The wine list arrives laminated, probably the same one that's been in rotation since 2014. It's short, safe, and built for people who want something wet and Italian-adjacent without too much fuss. Nothing here is going to surprise you — and that's exactly the point.
The list leans Italian with a California backup plan, which sounds promising until you clock the producers: Cavit, Ecco Domani, Ruffino — these are supermarket staples dressed up in a restaurant setting. There's no real depth here, no small-production finds, no attempt to go beyond the obvious. The Italian focus is mostly Pinot Grigio and Chianti, which covers the bases without covering any ground. California fills the rest of the card with crowd-pleasing reds and whites that could appear on any chain list in America.
Ten to sixteen options by the glass is a decent count, but the range is narrow — expect a few whites, a couple reds, maybe a rosé. Prices run $8–$14, which sounds accessible until you remember these are bottles that retail for $10–$15. The markup is doing real work here.
Ruffino Chianti — $9
It's not profound, but Ruffino Chianti is at least a legitimate Italian wine with some regional character. At the lower end of the glass price range, it's the most honest pour on the list — bright, a little tannic, and it actually makes sense next to a plate of pasta.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio
Most people skip Santa Margherita because it's become a punchline for overpriced Pinot Grigio — but at a chain restaurant where the alternative is Cavit, it's actually the move. It has more weight and texture than the other Grigios on the list, and it holds up better against the richer pasta dishes.
Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio
This is a $9 retail bottle sitting on a restaurant list at a meaningful markup. Thin, neutral, and forgettable — you're paying chain prices for grocery store wine. There's no reason to order this when Ruffino or Santa Margherita are on the same list.
Ruffino Chianti + Lasagna Classico
Chianti and a meaty, tomato-heavy lasagna is one of the few genuinely correct wine calls you can make here. The acidity cuts through the richness, the red fruit plays off the sauce, and for once the list is actually pointing you in the right direction.
❌ The Bottom Line
Olive Garden's wine list exists to check a box, not elevate a meal — it's priced above its station and assembled without much curiosity. Order the Chianti, eat the breadsticks, and don't come here expecting the wine to be the point.
Apache Mall · Rochester · American
The Cheesecake Factory's wine list is exactly what you'd expect from a high-volume mall chain: safe, recognizable, and marked up enough to make you wish you'd ordered a cocktail. Come for the Chicken Madeira, skip the wine hunt.

CRAVE isn't a wine destination, but it's a perfectly competent place to drink on a Monday when those bottle prices get cut in half. Show up any other night and you're paying full markup on a list that doesn't earn it.

Ground Round is a solid spot for a burger and a beer — lean into that and don't look at the wine list. If someone at your table insists on wine, point them toward the Kim Crawford and move on.

South · Rochester · American bar and grill, burgers
Newt's South is not a wine destination — it's a great burger bar that happens to sell wine at suspiciously cheap prices. Come for the food, order a beer, and if you must have wine, hit it on a Wednesday when the glasses drop to under four bucks.

ThaiPop isn't a wine destination, but its list is smarter than the size suggests — just stick to the aromatic, low-tannin options and leave the Cab to someone else. If you're in downtown Rochester and want Thai food with a decent glass of something cold and food-friendly, you won't be disappointed.

Five West is a perfectly competent neighborhood spot where the wine list does its job without embarrassing anyone. Don't come here chasing something rare — come for the patio, order The Beach Rosé, and call it a win.

Olive Garden Cedar Rapids is not a wine destination — it never pretended to be, and that's fine. But if you're sitting down here, order the Chianti, skip the Mondavi Cab, and save your serious wine drinking for somewhere that cares.

Olive Garden is not a wine destination and was never trying to be one — the list exists to move bottles, not to inspire anyone. Order the Il Grigio if you want something worth drinking, otherwise stick to the Chianti and save your wine energy for somewhere else.

Maggiano's Naperville is a reliable wine stop the same way a highway rest area is a reliable food stop — it works, no one's going out of their way for it, but you won't leave thirsty. If the table is ordering family-style and everyone needs a glass in hand, this list gets the job done.
