Wingman Metrics
You don't expect a winery in Midland β the Permian Basin is better known for crude than Cab β so walking into Texas Sun feels like a genuine find. The patio vibe is casual and inviting, live music in the background, small plates making the rounds. The list is short, but it's theirs, and that counts for something.
This is an estate-focused house, which means you're drinking Texas Sun's own production start to finish β no deep cellar of outside bottles to explore. The lineup leans into Texas appellations with a red blend, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Muscat anchoring the whites. Don't come here looking for Burgundy or a deep old-world selection; that's not the point. What it does offer is a rare chance to drink genuinely local West Texas wine in the place that made it.
With 10-20 pours available by the glass in the $8β$16 range, the BTG program is actually the entire menu β this is a winery tasting room at heart, so almost everything pours by the glass. The range covers their estate reds and whites without a ton of variety between them, but the price point keeps it approachable for a long afternoon on the patio.
Texas Sun Winery Muscat β $8
At the low end of the price range, the Muscat is an easy, aromatic pour that works perfectly in the Texas heat. It's not trying to be something it's not, and at this price you can order two without thinking twice.
Texas Sun Winery Estate Red Blend
Most people default to the Cab because they recognize the name, but the estate red blend is where the winemaker actually has room to show personality. Texas blends often outperform single-varietal bottlings from the same producer β this one is worth the curiosity.
Texas Sun Winery Cabernet Sauvignon
Cab is the safe order, and that's exactly why it's also the least interesting one here. West Texas Cab can struggle to hit the weight and structure most people expect from the variety, and you'll get a better sense of what this winery actually does by trying their blend instead.
Texas Sun Winery Estate Red Blend + Charcuterie or small plates
The patio small-plates format and a pourable, approachable red blend are essentially built for each other β casual grazing, shared bites, and a wine that doesn't demand your full attention but rewards it.
π² The Bottom Line
Texas Sun is a genuine local story in a city that doesn't have many of them, and for that alone it earns a visit. Just set your expectations to 'fun afternoon on the patio' rather than 'deep wine exploration' and you'll leave happy.
North Midland / Loop 250 Β· Midland Β· Tex-Mex and Mexican
Abuelo's is a great place to eat enchiladas and drink a margarita β the wine list is an afterthought and should be treated as one. If wine matters to you tonight, this isn't your spot.

Loop 250 / Retail Corridor Β· Midland Β· American Gastropub
Cork & Pig is doing more with wine than anyone should expect from a retail-corridor gastropub in Midland. The markups sting a little at the top end, but the Social Hour pricing and the breadth of the by-the-glass program make this an easy recommendation for locals who want something better than house red.

North Midland Β· Midland Β· Urban Winery
Texas Sun Winery is a genuinely weird and fun detour in a city not known for wine culture β the sangria program is novel, the Texas wine wall is an unexpected bonus, and the by-the-glass markup is something to watch. Come for the experience, order the bottle, skip the solo glass.

Pi Social isn't a wine destination, but it doesn't bill itself as one. If you're in Midland, grabbing a glass of Prosecco before a pizza on the patio, this does the job without gouging you β and that's a reasonable ask.

North Midland Β· Midland Β· Wine Bistro
Texas Sun Winery Bistro is doing something genuinely unusual in a city where the default move is a steakhouse Cab β a house-label global list with fair prices, 38 pours by the glass, and Armenian wines you won't find anywhere else in the Permian Basin. Send your most wine-curious friend here and tell them to ignore the Malbec.

Pi Social isn't going to win any wine program awards, but the Thursday half-price bottles and a surprisingly solid Villa Matilde Aglianico make it worth skipping the cocktail menu at least once. For Midland, this is a respectable effort β show up on Thursday and drink smarter than the room.
