You don't walk into a suburban Annapolis strip mall expecting a 350-bottle list with a sommelier on the floor — but here we are. Smashing Grapes hits you immediately with a list that has actual range and some genuine thought behind it. This isn't a wine list that got assembled from a distributor's sample box; someone cared.
California anchors the list with serious intent — Neyers shows up in multiple expressions, from their approachable Left Bank Red blend to the estate-level ÂME Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, which tells you the buyer knows the producer and isn't just cherry-picking a label. Spain and Argentina round out the international side well, with Bodega Juan Benegas representing the Mendoza contingent credibly. Germany gets a nod too, which is refreshing for a Mediterranean concept — most places skip it entirely. The gaps are minor: more southern Mediterranean representation (Sicily, Greece, Lebanon) would match the kitchen's flavors better, but at 350 bottles, it's hard to complain too loudly.
Thirty-eight by-the-glass options is a genuine statement — that's not a list, that's a program. The $12–$22 range covers meaningful ground, and with Iron & Sand Cabernet Sauvignon and the Neyers Left Bank Red both available to try before you commit to a bottle, there's real upside here. Neyers punches well above its price point — this is a California producer doing Bordeaux-style blending with discipline, and getting it by the glass at a fair pour price is exactly the kind of discovery a list like this should be making possible.
Bodega Juan Benegas Malbec
Most people scroll past anything Argentine on a California-heavy list, but Benegas is a family operation with real terroir focus in Mendoza — this isn't supermarket Malbec. Most tables at Smashing Grapes will never order it, which means you probably should.
Iron & Sand Cabernet Sauvignon
Iron & Sand is a fine everyday Cab, but on a list with Neyers Ranch and the ÂME Vineyard available, spending your dollars here feels like ordering house coffee at a specialty roaster. Step up a tier — the list earns it.
Neyers Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon + Lamb flatbread
Neyers Ranch Cab has the structure and dark fruit to stand up to lamb without bulldozing it — the herbal notes in both the wine and the flatbread toppings create an echo that makes each bite and sip feel intentional.
