First Impression

Walking into Rose Tavern, the wine list feels like a love letter to New York state โ€” specifically the Finger Lakes โ€” backed up by a serious supporting cast from Burgundy, Barolo country, and California. This isn't a hotel restaurant wine list phoning it in; someone with real conviction built this. The Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator is earned, not decorative.

Selection Deep Dive

The backbone here is unmistakably local: Dr. Konstantin Frank, Ravines Wine Cellars, and Hermann J. Wiemer anchor the Finger Lakes Riesling section, which alone is worth the visit if you're a white wine person eating near Canandaigua Lake. Bedell Cellars from Long Island adds geographic range without feeling like a token New York nod. The list then stretches credibly into France and Italy โ€” Burgundy and Barolo/Barbaresco selections suggest the cellar has depth beyond just regional cheerleading. California Cab rounds it out for the crowd that needs it, priced fairly enough that it doesn't feel like a cash-grab afterthought.

By the Glass

With 20-35 options by the glass ranging $12-$22, this is a by-the-glass program that lets you actually explore โ€” not just a Chardonnay, a Cab, and an apology. The Finger Lakes Riesling producers almost certainly rotate through the glass program, which means you can taste the terroir without committing to a bottle. At $12-$16 for local pours, the entry point is respectful.

๐Ÿ’ฐBest Value

Ravines Wine Cellars Dry Riesling โ€” $14 (glass)

Ravines is one of the Finger Lakes' most consistent producers, and getting their Dry Riesling by the glass at this price point โ€” steps from Canandaigua Lake โ€” is exactly the kind of moment Rose Tavern is built for. Drinks well above its price, no question.

๐Ÿ’ŽHidden Gem

Bedell Cellars (Long Island)

Most guests tunnel-vision on the Finger Lakes section โ€” understandably โ€” but Bedell Cellars from Long Island's North Fork is doing serious work that flies under the radar for anyone not from the East End. It's a different expression of New York wine entirely, and worth seeking out on this list.

โ›”Skip This

California Cabernet Sauvignon (generic selections)

The California Cab options exist here to satisfy a familiar order, but in a room surrounded by world-class Finger Lakes Riesling and credible Italian reds, ordering a generic California Cab is a missed opportunity dressed up in a comfortable bottle. You can get that anywhere. You can't get Hermann J. Wiemer everywhere.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธPerfect Pairing

Hermann J. Wiemer Riesling + Wood-fired roasted chicken or pork from the hearth

Wiemer's Riesling has the acidity and stone fruit tension to cut through the fat and char of anything coming off a wood-fired hearth, without overwhelming the delicate farm-forward ingredients Rose Tavern is built around. It's local, it's precise, and it makes the plate taste better.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Bottom Line

Rose Tavern is the best argument for a wine-focused road trip to the Finger Lakes that doesn't involve a tasting room โ€” two knowledgeable sommeliers, a deep local list at fair prices, and a setting worthy of the pour. Send your friends here without hesitation.
