Walking into Reynolds Tavern feels like stepping into a colonial painting — low ceilings, candlelight, the whole bit. The wine list matches the vibe: not trying to impress anyone, but it's not embarrassing either. For a historic tavern where afternoon tea is the headliner, the wine program holds its own.
Thirty to fifty bottles covering France, California, and a handful of local Maryland and Virginia producers — it's a modest but considered list. The Rhône shows up with the Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is a serious anchor for a room better known for scones. Champagne options lean safe with Veuve Clicquot and Perrier-Jouët Blason Rosé, but the inclusion of biodynamic options like the Forever Young Rosé from Côtes de Provence and local picks like Sugarloaf Vineyards and Windridge Winery Albariño shows someone's paying at least some attention. Gaps in depth — no real Burgundy, no Riesling, nothing particularly adventurous — but it reads as intentional restraint rather than laziness.
Ten to sixteen pours by the glass is a respectable range for a tavern of this size. The selection spans rosé, white blends, and reds without leaning too heavily on any one region. Rotation appears minimal — this list feels more static than seasonal, but what's there works for the food.
Windridge Winery Albariño — null
A locally sourced Albariño in a room full of fish and chips? That's the move. Albariño's natural acidity and saline edge cut through fried food better than most whites on this list, and supporting a Virginia producer at a Maryland landmark feels exactly right.
Lâl Kavaklidere Aegean Rosé
A Turkish rosé on a colonial tavern list in Annapolis is genuinely unexpected — and Kavaklidere is a serious producer. Most tables will reach for the Provence bottle, but this one offers something different and worth the conversation.
Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Black Label Claret Bordeaux Blend
The Coppola Diamond tier is grocery store wine dressed up in a fancy label. At restaurant markup, you're paying a significant premium for something you could grab at Total Wine for under $20. The Vieux Télégraphe is right there — spend accordingly.
Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge + Shepherd's Pie
A Grenache-dominant southern Rhône with braised lamb and root vegetables is about as natural a match as wine gets. The earthy, garrigue-laced character of Vieux Télégraphe meets the richness of the shepherd's pie without either one overpowering the other.
