District Oakland bills itself as a wine and whiskey bar, and the wine list punches well above what that descriptor usually promises. Seventeen bottles, all available by the glass — no dead weight, no filler — and the list reads like someone actually thought about it rather than just calling their distributor rep.
The list is organized into four sections — sparkling, wispy whites, well-rounded whites, and reds split between bright and beyond-Bordeaux — and every slot earns its place. You've got Grüner Veltliner from Kremstal, a Gavi from San Lorenzo, Serge Dagueneau Pouilly Fumé, and a Rioja Reserva from Ugalde sitting next to a Barbera from Maruo Molino. That's a genuinely interesting spread for 17 labels. The California presence is restrained and purposeful — LOLA Russian River Pinot, ZD Chardonnay, Crū Santa Lucia Highlands — rather than the usual parade of grocery-shelf brands. Gaps exist: no skin-contact wines, no domestic sparkling beyond Roederer Estate, and the red section leans heavily on Pinot. But what's here is curated, not assembled.
All 17 bottles pour by the glass, ranging $12–$20, which is the right move for a list this compact and this diverse. That range lets you explore without committing to a bottle of Dagueneau on a Tuesday. No obvious rotation or reserve program noted, so what you see is what you get — but what you see is pretty good.
Aigner Grüner Veltliner, Kremstal — $48
The cheapest bottle on the list and arguably the most interesting white. Austrian Grüner this clean and food-friendly typically runs $55–$65 at comparable spots. At $48 a bottle — or roughly $12–$14 a glass — it's the easy call if you want something that isn't Chardonnay.
Maruo Molino 'Leradici', Barbera, Piemonte 2021
Barbera gets ignored at most restaurant tables because nobody knows what to do with it. High acid, dark fruit, no oak hammer — it's the kind of red that works with almost everything and almost nobody orders it. At $56, it's also one of the more fairly priced reds on the list.
ZD Chardonnay, California 2022
ZD is a perfectly fine Napa producer but at $72 a bottle it's the most predictable, least exciting pick on the list. You could drink the Vigneron de Buxy Burgundy Chardonnay for $52 and get more terroir for less money. The ZD just doesn't justify the premium in this context.
Fillaboa Albariño, D.O. Rías Baixas 2022 + Charcuterie board
Without confirmed menu dishes we're working with what District Oakland is known for as a wine bar — and Fillaboa Albariño's bright acidity and saline finish cuts right through cured meats and hard cheeses. It's the classic Galician move for a reason.
The Bottom Line
District Oakland is doing something quietly impressive: a whiskey bar with a wine list that would embarrass most dedicated wine bars. The pricing is honest, the selections have a point of view, and the all-glass-pour format means you can graze your way through regions without any commitment. Send a friend? Yes — especially the friend who thinks they don't like wine.
