Wingman Metrics
Walk into Minervas and the room tells you exactly what kind of wine list you're getting: booth seating, dim lighting, and a menu built around prime rib and hand-cut steaks. The wine list follows that energy — familiar names, safe bets, nothing that's going to start an argument at the table.
The list leans heavily on grocery-store-familiar producers — Ecco Domani, Estancia, J.Lohr, Cigar Box — which is a reliable playbook for a hotel-adjacent steakhouse in Rapid City but won't win any adventurous-drinker awards. There's no meaningful old-world representation, no Burgundy, no Rhône, no Spanish reds worth writing home about. To their credit, they've got geographic spread across California, Argentina, New Zealand, and Germany, so at least you're not staring at a wall of Napa Cabs. The Conundrum Red Blend and Portillo Malbec add a little personality to an otherwise paint-by-numbers lineup.
Fourteen by-the-glass options is a respectable number for this market and means most people at the table can find something that works. The range covers white, red, and a couple of curve balls, though rotation doesn't appear to be a priority — this list feels like it's been sitting comfortably for a while. Happy hour drops $2 off glass pours Monday through Saturday, 3–6pm, bar only, which is the move if you're timing it right.
Portillo Malbec — null
Malbec from Mendoza at a steakhouse is almost always the value sweet spot — fruit-forward, structured enough for beef, and Argentine producers like Portillo keep costs honest. If the markup is in line with the rest of the list, this is your best dollar-for-dollar glass.
Gustav Schmitt Riesling
Most people at a steakhouse walk right past the Riesling column, which is their loss. A touch of residual sweetness and bright acidity make this a surprisingly smart call against the richer pasta dishes or even as a palate reset mid-meal.
Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio
Ecco Domani retails for around $10 a bottle and shows up on wine lists at a markup that rarely makes sense. It's inoffensive in the way that beige wallpaper is inoffensive — technically fine, entirely forgettable, and you can do better.
J.Lohr 'Seven Oaks' Cabernet Sauvignon + Hand-cut steak
Seven Oaks is built for exactly this moment — ripe dark fruit, soft tannins, and enough structure to hold up against a well-marbled ribeye or New York strip without overpowering it. It's the obvious call, and the obvious call exists for a reason.
Monday–Saturday — $2 off wine by the glass during Happy Hour, 3pm–6pm, available in the bar only
✔️ The Bottom Line
Minervas is a perfectly competent wine program for a steakhouse in western South Dakota — it's not going to surprise you, but it won't let you down either. Hit the happy hour bar window, order the Malbec or the Cab with your steak, and call it a win.
North Rapid City · Rapid City · Hotel Lounge
Timbers Lounge is a place to have a drink after a long drive to Mount Rushmore, not a destination for wine. Order a cocktail or a beer and save your wine energy for somewhere that's put in the work.

Central Rapid City · Rapid City · Mexican
Mi Mexico is not a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be — order a margarita, enjoy your meal, and don't expect the wine list to surprise you. If you absolutely must have wine with your tacos, the Sangria is $6.25 and nobody will judge you.

East Rapid City · Rapid City · Steakhouse
LongHorn Rapid City is exactly what it is — a reliable chain steakhouse with a wine list that was built by committee and hasn't changed much since. If you're here for the steak, you'll be fine; just aim for the Joel Gott and don't expect the staff to talk you through it.

There is no version of this wine list that warrants a special trip or even a deliberate order — it's a functional corporate program designed to move bottles, not to impress. If you're at Outback for the steak, grab the Alamos Malbec and call it a night; if wine actually matters to you, this is a cocktail dinner.

This is a wine list that exists purely because restaurants are expected to have one. Don't come to Applebee's for wine — but if you're already here and you need a glass, the Mondavi Cab won't embarrass you.

Red Lobster Rapid City's wine list exists to check a box, not to enhance your meal. Order the Riesling if you must, but honestly, a cocktail or a cold draft will serve you better here.

Copper Grill is a reliable neighborhood spot that won't challenge you on wine — and that's fine, because it's not trying to. Send a friend here for a solid steak and a glass of something familiar, but remind them to skip the Caymus markup.

Fire & Oak is a reliable port in a storm — decent bottles, familiar names, prices that sting but won't shock you. If you're already staying at the Westin or catching a meal before the PATH, you could do worse; just don't make a special trip for the wine list.
