First Impression
Merchants gives you the confident feeling of a neighborhood spot that's been doing this for a while. The wine list arrives with heft but not pretension—a one-page approachable selection that won't intimidate but might not thrill the hardcore wine nerds either. It's the kind of list where you know you'll find something decent without having to decode obscure appellations.
Selection Deep Dive
The list leans heavily into California and France, with predictable but competent choices from both regions. You'll find a handful of Oregon Pinots, some Washington Cabernets, and a respectful nod to Italian reds—mostly Tuscany and Piedmont. The French section covers Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhône with safe, recognizable producers rather than deep cuts. There's enough range to cover most preferences, but the list plays it safe—no natural wines, no orange experiments, no obscure Eastern European gems. Think more Louis Jadot than Jura.
By the Glass
The glass pour program runs about 10-12 options spanning whites, reds, and a token sparkling. Rotation seems limited—these appear to be set pours rather than an active weekly changing program. Prices hover in the $12-16 range, which is reasonable for downtown Nashville but not a steal. The pours are generous enough to justify the price, and the staff will recommend based on your food order if you ask.
Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sèvre et Maine — $42
Classic Loire Valley minerality at a price that doesn't punish—crisp, clean, and lower markup than most of the list
Stolpman Vineyards 'Love You Bunches' Carbonic Sangiovese
Ballard Canyon bottling that brings juicy brightness and drinkability most people overlook for the safer Napa Cabs
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Standard Nashville steakhouse markup on an already overpriced producer—you're paying $130+ for a $50 wine experience
Chinon Rouge from Bernard Baudry + Roasted Chicken
Loire Cabernet Franc's herbal edge and bright acidity cut through roasted poultry fat while elevating the herbs
✔️ The Bottom Line
Merchants delivers exactly what it promises: a solid, uncomplicated wine experience in the heart of Nashville. The list won't blow your mind, but it won't disappoint either—and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
