The Margaritas Are Doing the Heavy Lifting

Wingman Metrics
Eight wines, all of them recognizable from a supermarket end cap. The list reads like someone grabbed what was on sale at the distributor and called it done. There's no curiosity here, just coverage.
The lineup is Kendall Jackson, Murphy Goode, Barefoot, and Chloe — brands engineered for name recognition, not drinking pleasure. A Crowded House Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and a Cavaliere D'oro Pinot Grigio offer a brief nod to imported options, but they're still firmly in the commercial lane. There's no exploration of Spanish Riojas, Argentine Malbecs, or Chilean reds — wines that would actually make sense alongside Latin American food and give the list some regional personality. Eight labels total, zero surprises.
Everything on the list is available by the glass, which sounds generous until you realize the list is only eight bottles deep. Rotation appears nonexistent — this is a set-it-and-forget-it program with no seasonal updates or new pours to reward repeat visitors. If you're coming back regularly, you'll be staring at the same eight options every time.
Crowded House Sauvignon Blanc — $10
It's the one wine on the list with a reason to exist here. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc's citrus and herb snap plays nicely against salsa verde and lighter taco fillings. Relative to the rest of the list, it at least makes sense.
Chloe Rosé
Nobody picks rosé at a burrito spot, but they should. It's light, it's refreshing, and it handles spice better than most of the reds on this list. Low expectations, reasonable result.
Barefoot Merlot
Barefoot retails for under $8 a bottle. At restaurant pour prices, you're paying a significant markup on a wine that has no business being anyone's choice when there are actual cocktails on the menu.
Crowded House Sauvignon Blanc + Enchiladas
The bright acidity and green herb character in the Sauvignon Blanc cut through the richness of enchilada sauce without fighting the spice. It's the closest this list gets to an intentional pairing.
❌ The Bottom Line
Margarita's isn't a wine destination and has no ambitions to become one — order a margarita and move on. If someone at your table insists on wine, the Crowded House Sauvignon Blanc is the least painful exit.
West Hartford Center · Hartford · Upscale American Seafood and Raw Bar
Max's Oyster Bar is exactly the kind of reliable wine program a seafood-focused restaurant should have — thoughtfully built around what's on the plate, staffed by people who can guide you through it. The markup keeps it from being exceptional, but if you stick to the Old World whites, you'll drink very well.

West Hartford · Hartford · American Tavern
Tavern in the Square West Hartford is a perfectly decent place to watch a game and eat a burger, but the wine list is purely functional — familiar brands, steep markups, and zero curation. Stick to draft beer or a cocktail unless a glass of Prosecco is all you need.

Max's Trumbull Kitchen is a reliable wine stop elevated by a genuinely smart focus on seafood-friendly whites — just don't pay full price when you can come back on Thursday and get the whole list at half off. That changes the math considerably.

Max Burger isn't a wine destination — it's a burger destination that happens to take wine seriously enough to price it fairly and run half-off Thursdays. If you're eating here anyway, you're in better shape than you think.

Fleming's West Hartford is a reliable, polished steakhouse wine program that does exactly what it sets out to do — pour well-known California wines in a nice glass to people who are already spending $60 on a steak. Just don't expect to discover anything, and watch the markup on the big names.

Sabor isn't a destination wine stop, but it's a genuinely honest program that doesn't embarrass itself — fair prices, regional relevance, and a Catena pour that punches above its surroundings. If you're eating here, you're drinking here, and you won't be disappointed.
