First Impression
Walking into Selva Grill, you get immediate tropical vibes—Latin flavors, colorful energy, vacation mode. The wine list feels like an afterthought, though: safe picks that don't take risks or match the menu's bold personality. It's functional, but you sense the kitchen gets way more attention than the cellar.
Selection Deep Dive
The list leans heavily on crowd-pleaser regions—California Cabs, basic Malbecs, a Prosecco or two. There's little exploration of South American wines beyond the obvious Argentine choices, which feels like a missed opportunity given the cuisine. You'll find standard Chardonnays and Pinot Grigios, but nothing that screams "we thought about this." The Old World section is thin, mostly Italian staples and Spanish Tempranillos that play it extremely safe. It's a list built for tourists who want something familiar, not wine lovers looking for discovery.
By the Glass
Glass pours are adequate but predictable—maybe six to eight options covering the basics. You'll see a house Chardonnay, a Cab, a Pinot Noir, probably a Malbec given the steakhouse-adjacent menu. Rotation seems minimal; these feel like permanent residents rather than seasonal swaps. Prices by the glass trend higher than they should given the selections—expect $12-$15 for wines you could grab at Total Wine for $15 a bottle.
Catena Malbec — $42
Solid Argentine producer that actually pairs well with grilled meats, and at least it's not marked up 5x like some options
Albariño from Rías Baixas
If they have one, it's your best bet with ceviche—crisp, coastal, cuts through citrus and heat better than any Chardonnay on the list
House Cabernet by the glass
Generic California juice at $14 a pour—you're paying vacation-town markup for grocery store quality
Argentine Torrontés + Ceviche or aguachile
Aromatic white with floral notes and zippy acidity that plays beautifully with raw fish, citrus, and cilantro—assuming they stock one
✔️ The Bottom Line
Selva Grill does what it needs to do for downtown Sarasota tourists: familiar wines that won't scare anyone off. But if you care about wine, you'll wish they showed the bottle list the same creativity they bring to the kitchen.
