First Impression
Opening the wine list at Manalù feels like someone actually cared — this isn't a suburban Italian joint that phoned it in with a Pinot Grigio and a Chianti and called it a day. The focus is squarely on Italy, which makes sense, and the range from Friuli whites to Barolo is real and considered. Wine Spectator has been giving them an Award of Excellence since 2023, and walking through the list, you see why.
Selection Deep Dive
Manalù leans hard into the Italian classics and doesn't apologize for it — Barolo from Piedmont, Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany, Chianti Classico Riserva, and Amarone all make the cut. The Super Tuscan corner is a flex: Sassicaia and Ornellaia showing up on a suburban Maryland list is not a given, and their presence signals ambition. The Pinot Grigio selections from Friuli-Venezia Giulia are a smart call — actual Friuli PG beats the mass-market stuff by a mile and at least one option here reflects that. Gaps show up on the non-Italian side, but honestly, that's by design, not neglect.
By the Glass
Ten to sixteen pours by the glass is a solid count for a room this size, and the price ceiling of $18 keeps things from feeling extractive. The range tracks the bottle list — you're getting genuine Italian options rather than a generic house pour situation. We'd like to see more rotation to keep regulars guessing, but what's here is honest.
Pinot Grigio from Friuli-Venezia Giulia — $10-$14 by the glass
Friuli Pinot Grigio is a different animal from the flabby supermarket versions — mineral, textured, actually interesting. At this price point by the glass, it's the move before the pasta arrives.
Chianti Classico Riserva
Most people at a place like this are gunning for the Barolo or the Super Tuscans, which means the Chianti Classico Riserva gets overlooked. It shouldn't — good Riserva from Tuscany is one of the most food-friendly wines on earth and usually comes in at a friendlier price on this list.
Sassicaia
Seeing Sassicaia on a list is exciting until you see the restaurant markup. This is a bottle that hits the secondary market hard, and restaurant pricing on it rarely makes sense unless you're celebrating something specific. Order it at home where the math works in your favor.
Amarone della Valpolicella + Ravioli stuffed with Gorgonzola, Pear and Ricotta
Amarone's dried-grape intensity and dark fruit weight meets the funky richness of Gorgonzola head-on, while the pear in the filling softens the wine's edges. This is the kind of pairing that makes you slow down and actually taste what's in front of you.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Manalù is doing real Italian wine work in a zip code that doesn't demand it, and that counts for something. If you're eating pasta or pizza in Frederick and you want a bottle that actually makes sense with the food, this is your spot.
