The Wine List Ordered From a Catalog

The wine list at Kirin reads like someone checked a box. You get your Mondavi, you get your Chateau Ste. Michelle, and that's more or less the whole story. There's no sense that anyone here lost sleep curating this thing.
We're looking at a tight roster of 10-20 bottles, anchored almost entirely in California and Washington with a nod to Oregon because, well, they're in Oregon. The producers are recognizable names you'd find at any grocery store — which isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's not exactly adventurous. There's no real exploration of the Pacific Northwest's genuinely exciting producers, which feels like a missed opportunity for a Eugene restaurant. No natural wine, no local small-production bottles, nothing that would make a wine-curious diner lean forward.
The by-the-glass program runs 4-8 options in the $7–$12 range, which is honest pricing for a casual sit-down spot. Don't expect much rotation — this is a set-it-and-forget-it operation. What you see today is almost certainly what you'll see in six months.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling — $9/glass est.
Riesling and Chinese-American food is actually a legitimately good combination — the off-dry fruit and bright acidity cut through sweet sauces and hold up to spice. At this price point, it's the smartest move on the menu.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
Most tables here are ordering the Cab out of habit. Don't. The Riesling is doing real work with this food, and almost nobody picks it.
Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon
A big tannic Cabernet fighting against General Tso's chicken is nobody's idea of a good time. The wine isn't the problem — the match is just wrong, and you can get this bottle at Safeway for the same money.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling + General Tso's Chicken
The slight sweetness and zippy acidity in the Riesling mirrors the sauce without getting steamrolled by it. It's one of those pairings that works better than it has any right to at this price.
❌ The Bottom Line
Kirin isn't a wine destination and it doesn't pretend to be — but the prices are fair and the Riesling with your General Tso's is a quiet win. Order accordingly and keep your expectations calibrated.
Crescent Village · Eugene · Local Northwest American Bar & Grill
B2 isn't trying to be a wine destination and doesn't need to be — it's a neighborhood spot with a list that respects both the region and your wallet. Send a friend here and tell them to order the Owen Roe Syrah before someone else does.

Valley River / North Eugene · Eugene · Japanese, teppanyaki, sushi
Fuji is a genuinely fun night out — the teppanyaki show is the main event and it delivers — but the wine list is strictly an afterthought, with steep markups on uninspired brands and zero connection to the cuisine or the local Oregon wine scene. Order the Riesling or the plum wine, enjoy the fire, and don't overthink it.

South Eugene · Eugene · Japanese
Makoto's wine list is exactly what it is — a small, sensible selection built for a neighborhood Japanese spot that cares more about the food than the cellar. Order the Riesling, don't overthink it, and you'll leave happy.

Downtown · Eugene · Hotel Restaurant
Two50 is a dependable wine stop if you're already staying at the Graduate and don't want to venture out — but it's not a destination. Lean into the local Oregon pours, skip the marked-up commodity bottles, and you'll have a perfectly fine evening.

Springfield · Eugene · Wine Bar
Iris Vineyards is a small producer doing their own thing in a town people usually drive through without stopping — and that's exactly why it's worth stopping. If you like the idea of drinking estate Oregon wine poured by people who actually grew it, this is your place.

Downtown Springfield · Eugene · Brewpub
Plank Town is a genuinely good brewpub and you should absolutely go there — just order a beer. The wine list exists to accommodate the one person in a group who doesn't drink beer, and it does that job adequately and nothing more.
