Wingman Metrics
The name sounds like a BBQ shack, but walk in and you get something closer to a proper neighborhood wine bar — upscale-casual, unhurried, and clearly trying harder than most spots this far off the island's tourist drag. The list is short, but whoever put it together was paying attention. This isn't a wine list that happened by accident.
Eleven labels is a tight edit, but the curation holds up. You get West Coast confidence — Ferrari-Carano pulling double duty in Chardonnay and Fumé Blanc, Benton-Lane bringing Oregon Pinot Noir credibility, and Krutz Family Cellars Magnolia anchoring the Cab side of things. The French presence is lean but smart: the Buxy Bourgogne Unoaked Côte Chalonnaise is a genuine outlier that earns its spot. Italy gets a nod with the Scarpetta Pinot Grigio, and a Blanc de Blancs Cava keeps the bubbly options honest. The gaps are real — no Rhône, no Riesling, nothing south of the equator — but within its footprint, the list is disciplined rather than lazy.
All eleven bottles pour by the glass, which is unusual and genuinely appreciated — no locked-up bottles you can only access by committing to a full pour. Prices run $9 to $20 a glass, which is reasonable for a resort-adjacent market that could absolutely get away with charging more. Rotation appears minimal based on available data, so don't expect a lot of seasonal surprises.
Backstory Chardonnay California 2020 — $9/glass, $34/bottle
At $34 a bottle, this is the easy yes when you want a crowd-pleasing Chardonnay without burning through your dinner budget. It's the kind of pour that overdelivers at the price point, especially in a market where $14 glasses of mediocre white wine are the norm.
Buxy Bourgogne Unoaked Côte Chalonnaise 2018
Most people at a place called HogsHead are ordering steak and Cab. That means the Buxy Bourgogne just sits there, quietly being one of the most interesting bottles on the list. Unoaked Burgundy from the Côte Chalonnaise is a steal in any context — crisp, mineral, food-friendly — and it almost certainly costs less than the Ferrari-Carano sitting next to it. Order this and feel smug about it.
Chandon Brut Rosé California NV
Sixty dollars for Chandon is a hard sell. Chandon is a fine sparkling wine — but it's a $20 bottle at most retail shops, and the 3x markup here doesn't buy you anything special. If you want bubbles, the Blanc de Blancs Cava is almost certainly the smarter play.
Benton-Lane Estate Grown Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2021 + Fresh local seafood specials
Willamette Pinot Noir is one of the few reds that can actually hang with delicate seafood without steamrolling it. Benton-Lane Estate is structured enough to be interesting but light enough to let the fish lead. When the catch of the day is running, this is the move.
✔️ The Bottom Line
HogsHead punches above its weight for a neighborhood spot tucked into a strip mall south of the island — the list is short but chosen with care, pricing is fair, and the glass program is genuinely generous. Send a friend here? Yes, especially if they're after a solid local wine bar that doesn't require a 30-minute drive toward the tourist circus.
Shelter Cove · Hilton Head Island · Seafood / New American
Sea Salt isn't trying to win a wine list award and it shows, but it's not trying to rip you off on selection either — just on price. If you're already there for the scallops and the view, the wine list will serve you fine; just set your expectations to vacation mode and not discovery mode.

Harbour Town / Sea Pines · Hilton Head Island · Resort / American
The Harbour Town Clubhouse wine list is exactly what it needs to be for its audience — familiar, functional, and unlikely to offend anyone in a golf shirt. Just know going in that you're paying resort prices for resort selections, and calibrate your expectations accordingly.

Reilley's is a reliable beach-town bar that happens to have wine — not a wine destination that happens to serve food. Hit it during happy hour for half-off house pours, order the Rosé with your crab cakes, and keep your expectations calibrated to the vibe.

Redfish is the kind of wine list that works better than it should for a coastal tourist spot — 400 bottles is nothing to dismiss, even if the selection leans on crowd-pleasing California names and the pricing reflects the zip code. Go in knowing what you want, order the Riesling by the glass, and you'll have a fine night.

The Pearl is a solid, well-dressed list that serves its upscale coastal crowd without rocking any boats. Bring a group, let someone order the Miraval, and don't let the Silver Oak get near your credit card.

Il Carpaccio is a reliable dinner option for Hilton Head visitors who want a glass of something recognizable without overthinking it — but anyone hoping to find Italy on the wine list will come up short. Drink the bubbles, enjoy the pasta, and don't expect the list to challenge you.
