First Impression
The setting does a lot of heavy lifting here — a lakefront dining room with live music and Oklahoma sunsets is a hard act to follow, and the wine list knows it. What you get is a safe, familiar lineup that leans hard into brand recognition over discovery. This is a list built for people who already know what they like and aren't looking to be challenged.
Selection Deep Dive
The list runs 50 to 80 bottles deep, which sounds promising until you see who's showing up to the party: Rombauer, Kim Crawford, Meiomi. These are wines you've seen at every steakhouse and chain Italian spot from here to Tulsa. The regional spread — California, New Zealand, France — checks the right boxes on paper, but the actual selections prioritize comfort over character. There's nothing wrong with any of these wines, but there's nothing surprising either. If you're hoping to find a Rhône producer or a small-production domestic bottling tucked in somewhere, keep looking.
By the Glass
Ten to fourteen options by the glass is a respectable count for this type of restaurant, and it tracks with the crowd-pleaser theme — you're going to find your Chardonnay and your Pinot Noir without any trouble. Rotation appears limited; don't expect the list to shift seasonally or reflect what's drinking well right now. It's a workable program for a weeknight dinner, just don't arrive hoping for pours that'll make you put your phone down.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc — $20
On Wednesdays, select bottles drop to $20 all day — and if Kim Crawford is on that list, it's the move. It's a clean, reliable Marlborough SB that works well with the seafood menu and doesn't pretend to be anything it's not.
Rombauer Chardonnay
It's not exactly obscure, but in an Oklahoma lakefront restaurant where the wine list plays it safe, Rombauer is actually the most interesting thing going. It's rich and full without being sloppy, and it holds up to the kitchen's bolder preparations in a way that lighter whites here won't.
Meiomi Pinot Noir
Meiomi is a mass-market blended Pinot that retails for around $15 — at restaurant markup in a $$$-priced spot, you're overpaying for a wine that was built for grocery store shelves. Save your money for a second glass of something else.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc + Pecan Crusted Trout
Bright citrus and herbal snap against the nutty, rich crust on the trout — the acidity cuts through the fat and lets the fish do its thing. It's the most natural match on a list that doesn't offer a lot of options.
Wednesday — $20 select bottles of wine all day on Wednesdays — check with your server for which bottles are included.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Hefner Grill is a genuinely lovely place to have dinner — the lake view earns its keep — but the wine list is content to coast on the scenery. Show up on a Wednesday for the $20 bottle deal, pick something cold and crisp with your trout, and let the sunset do the rest of the work.
