Wingman Metrics
Twenty-two labels isn't a lot, but when a tapas bar in Gainesville, Georgia is pouring Albariño, Cava, and Rioja Crianza by the glass, you pay attention. The list has a clear point of view — Iberian by instinct, approachable by design — and that's more than most places twice the size can claim. It's not trying to be a wine bar, but it's not pretending wine is an afterthought either.
The Spanish spine is real: Sierra Cantabria Crianza, Marqués de Cáceres Tempranillo, Conde Valdemar, Bodegas Olarra Red Blend, and a Marqués de Riscal Rosado give the list genuine Iberian credibility. The sparkling section punches above its weight with both Segura Viudas and Berceo Cava alongside a Prosecco, which is a solid three-way for fizz lovers. Where it loses points is on the filler — Bonanza Cab, The Seeker Cab, and Caposaldo Moscato are grocery-store staples that dilute what could be a tighter, more focused list. The Marqués de Casa Concha Cabernet at $68 bottle-only stands out as the reserve anchor, though it's a bit of an odd fit for a Spanish tapas concept.
Nearly the entire list — 20 of 22 wines — pours by the glass, which is genuinely generous and makes this a great spot to mix and match with a spread of small plates. Prices land at $11–$12 per glass across the board, which is honest money for this market. The Albariño and both Cavas being available by the glass is the real win here; those are the pours that actually make sense with tapas.
The Bottom Line
Don Quixote gets more right than wrong: fair prices, a by-the-glass program that actually rewards exploration, and enough Spanish DNA in the list to feel intentional. Trim the grocery-store filler, lean harder into the Iberian producers, and this list goes from solid to genuinely exciting. For now, it's a reliable neighborhood find worth a visit — just order the Albariño or the Cava and let the small plates do the rest.

The Stag is doing more than most steakhouses bother to do with wine — a thoughtful sparkling section, fair markups, and a few genuinely interesting whites make this list worth engaging with rather than defaulting to a cocktail. If you're eating steak in Gainesville, this is where you want to be drinking.

CHR Steak is doing what a steakhouse in Gainesville, Georgia should do: keeping the focus on American Cabs, pricing fairly, and giving guests enough by-the-glass variety to make a whole dinner interesting without forcing a bottle commitment. It's not a wine destination, but if you're sitting down to a steak here, you won't be stuck drinking something bad or paying through the nose for it — and that's a bar more places should clear.

Luna's is a genuinely pleasant place to have dinner, and the wine list won't embarrass anyone — but it's built for comfort, not discovery. If you're coming for the Chicken Marsala and a glass of something red in a nice room, you'll leave happy. If wine is the reason you're making the reservation, you may want to call ahead and ask what's actually on the list before you commit.

Amelia's is a genuinely pleasant dinner destination in downtown Gainesville, and the food — especially the lobster ravioli and veal piccata — gives the wine list every opportunity to shine. It just doesn't quite meet the moment. Come for the food, order a bottle to share, and don't expect the list to surprise you.

Piesanos isn't trying to be a wine destination, and the list makes that abundantly clear. The pricing is at least fair for what it is, and the Banfi Chianti or Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling will serve you better than defaulting to Canyon Road on autopilot. If wine matters to you, this is a beer-and-pizza night disguised as an Italian restaurant.

Shula's is a competent hotel steakhouse wine program — it won't embarrass you in front of a client, but it won't thrill you either. The regional framework is solid, the pricing almost certainly reflects the hotel setting, and the list is designed for comfort over curiosity. If you're in Gainesville and need a reliable red with a serious steak, it gets the job done; just don't show up expecting a deep dive.

Blackjack Bar Tapas runs one of the smallest wine lists we've come across in Atlanta, but it's hard to fully roast it — the four picks are genuinely considered. The markups are a little stiff across the board, and if you're hoping for a Spanish red to wash down your tapas, you're out of luck. But if you want a glass of zero-dosage Cava or an Oregon Pinot Gris at a bar that clearly has a point of view, this list delivers more than it has any right to.

AltaToro isn't here to impress wine nerds, but it's not ignoring them either. The Iberian focus is real, the glass count is generous, and the pricing is honest enough that you won't feel taxed for drinking well. Send a friend here who wants wine that actually fits the food — just don't send them expecting a deep cellar.
