The wine list at Cafe Normandie reads exactly like the restaurant looks: classically French, a little cozy, and not trying to impress anyone. It's an all-French lineup, which earns immediate respect, but don't expect to be challenged — this list is here to support the food, not steal the show.
The list leans hard into the Loire and Burgundy traditions, which makes sense given the kitchen's direction. You'll find a Sancerre from a reliable producer like Henri Bourgeois, a Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie for when you want something lean and honest, and village-level Burgundy Chardonnay — think Mâcon or Chablis — covering the white side without going deep. Reds are anchored by Côtes du Rhône and Bordeaux appellations like Médoc or Saint-Émilion, serviceable and crowd-friendly without much adventure. An Alsatian Riesling or Pinot Gris rounds things out and is honestly the most interesting thing on the list. The gaps are real — no Champagne worth noting, no Beaujolais, no Loire reds — but within its lane, it holds together.
With 8 to 14 options by the glass, you're covered for a full meal without committing to a bottle. The pours skew predictable — expect the Côtes du Rhône and Mâcon/Chablis style whites to anchor the program — but the Alsatian Riesling by the glass would be our go-to move. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority here; this list feels like it hasn't changed much since the Clinton administration.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie — $38
Muscadet is chronically underpriced relative to how well it performs at the table, and in a French bistro context it's genuinely one of the smartest bottles you can order. Lean, saline, and built for seafood and light starters — it punches well above whatever they're charging for it.
Alsatian Riesling
Most people at a French bistro default straight to Burgundy or Sancerre, but the Alsatian Riesling is quietly the most versatile bottle on this list. It handles rich dishes like crepes with smoked salmon or anything cream-sauced without flinching, and it's almost always overlooked in favor of more familiar names.
Bordeaux (Médoc or Saint-Émilion)
Generic Bordeaux at a mid-range bistro is almost never worth it. You're paying restaurant markup on a category that's already inflated at retail, for bottles that rarely deliver at the price point. The Rhône reds do the same job for less money and more personality.
Sancerre (Henri Bourgeois or similar) + Crepes
A savory crepe — whether it's ham and gruyère or something lighter — wants a wine with clean acidity and a little herbaceous lift to cut through the richness. Sancerre does exactly that. It's a classic French bistro handshake and it works every time.
