Beach Town Backup When You Need a Pour

Brick & Barrel's wine list reads like a Gulf Coast tourist safety net — recognizable names, beach-friendly pricing that still stings a bit, nothing to get excited about but nothing actively offensive. The vibe is vacation mode, which means the list exists to keep pace with frozen margaritas, not to challenge anyone's palate.
The selection leans heavy on California crowd-pleasers and a handful of Italian standards that won't scare off the Cabernet-only crowd. You'll find the usual suspects: a Sonoma Chardonnay, a Napa Cab that costs too much, maybe a Pinot Grigio for the white wine drinkers who don't actually like wine. Regional depth is non-existent — this is a list built for broad appeal in a beach town where most people are here for the shrimp, not the Sancerre. No boutique producers, no natural wines, no reason to study the list for more than thirty seconds.
The glass program is functional at best — probably six to eight options that rotate about as often as the tide. Expect a safe Chardonnay, a fruit-forward red blend, maybe a Prosecco for toasting sunburn recovery. Pours are standard, pricing is tourist-markup, and freshness depends entirely on turnover. If the restaurant's busy, you're fine. If it's a slow Tuesday, cross your fingers.
Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cabernet Sauvignon — $32
Washington State delivers more structure than California at this price point, and it's one of the few bottles here that won't make you wince at the markup
Banfi Chianti Classico
Everyone orders the Super Tuscan, but this everyday Chianti has better acidity for cutting through fried seafood and costs $15 less
Any Napa Cabernet over $75
The markup here pushes these into triple-digit territory for bottles you can find at Total Wine for $40 — save your money for the raw bar
Josh Cellars Sauvignon Blanc + Grilled Gulf Shrimp
It's basic, but the citrus punch and clean finish are built for butter-drenched shrimp and a sunset view
✔️ The Bottom Line
Brick & Barrel isn't going to wow anyone who cares about wine, but it gets the job done when you're on vacation and just need something cold and drinkable. Order the glass pour, keep expectations beachy, and focus on the view.

Rouses isn't where you'd go for wine education or rare finds, but for beach vacation provisioning, it's more than competent. Fair prices, decent selection, and it beats the hell out of the hotel gift shop.

Crab Claw does what it does well — casual Gulf seafood in a beach town setting. But the wine program is neglected, overpriced, and shows zero effort. Order the crabs, drink the beer, save wine for literally anywhere else.

Catablu is exactly what it needs to be for its neighborhood — a reliable, thoughtfully maintained list that won't embarrass you on a date night or bore you entirely. It's not a destination wine list, but it's a solid supporting act for a kitchen that clearly takes food seriously.

BJ's is a fine place to drink a craft beer and eat a Pizookie. It is not a place to drink wine. Order a Brewhouse Blonde, skip the wine list entirely, and save your wine night for somewhere that cares.

The Cheesecake Factory is a perfectly fine place to eat — the wine list just isn't a reason to go. Order a cocktail, split a bottle of Santa Margherita if you must, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that earned it.
