First Impression
Walking into Rouses in Gulf Shores, you're not expecting much from the wine aisle—but this Gulf Coast grocery chain actually stocks a respectable selection. The fluorescent lighting and shopping carts rolling by aren't exactly romantic, but the bottles on the shelves punch above typical beach town grocery weight.
Selection Deep Dive
The selection leans practical rather than exciting: California crowd-pleasers dominate, with solid representation from Washington State and a sprinkling of French and Italian imports that clearly move volume during beach season. You'll find your Paso Robles Cabs, your Russian River Pinots, and enough Provençal rosé to outfit every beach house rental in Baldwin County. The Gulf Coast isn't known for wine culture, and Rouses knows its audience—vacationers who want something better than gas station wine but aren't hunting for Burgundy allocations. What's missing: natural wines, deeper Italian regions, anything adventurous.
By the Glass
This is a grocery store, so by-the-glass is obviously not a thing. But Rouses does stock single-serve splits and cans for beach-goers who don't want to commit to a full bottle. The canned wine selection includes brands like Underwood and Dark Horse—functional beach pours that won't break your cooler budget.
Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cabernet Sauvignon — $11
Washington State overdelivers at this price point—dark fruit, decent structure, and it's beach house friendly
Château d'Esclans Whispering Angel Rosé
Yes, it's everywhere, but at grocery pricing it's actually a solid Provençal rosé—and exactly what you want on a Gulf Shores deck at sunset
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
At $80+ in a grocery store, you're paying for the name—there are better Napa bottles elsewhere or better values on the same shelf
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc + Fresh Gulf shrimp from the seafood counter
Bright New Zealand acidity cuts through butter and garlic—grab both and you've got dinner sorted
✔️ The Bottom Line
Rouses isn't where you'd go for wine education or rare finds, but for beach vacation provisioning, it's more than competent. Fair prices, decent selection, and it beats the hell out of the hotel gift shop.
