Nearly 400 bottles, but markups bite back

Wingman Metrics
The list lands on your table like a small paperback novel — nearly 400 wines anchored hard in the Iberian Peninsula with detours through South America and Portugal. It's a genuine statement of intent, not a token wine section bolted onto a tapas menu. You're immediately in the hands of a team that actually thought about this.
Spain is the star and they commit to it: Rioja, Terra Alta, Penedès, Bairrada — regions that most Raleigh restaurants wouldn't dare spell, let alone stock. You'll find producers like Bodegas Lanzaga and Viña Callejuela sitting next to more familiar names, which gives the list real range across price and geek level. Portugal earns a respectable slice, and South America fills out the heavier end with Chilean Syrah and Argentine Malbec. The gaps are minor — if you're hunting serious Galicia or Canary Islands pours, you may come up short — but this is still one of the most regionally focused, purposeful lists in the city.
Eighteen options by the glass is a strong count, and the range spans sparkling, white, and red with prices running $4.25 to $7.25 per glass — among the most approachable in town for this caliber of list. The selection rotates through legitimately interesting stuff like the 2020 Vinos Piñol Raig de Raim and the 2019 La Maldita Garnacha rather than leaning on safe mass-market pours. If you're indecisive, this is actually the best way into the list.
2019 La Maldita, Rioja, Spain (Garnacha) — $34
At a 70% markup it's the most reasonably priced bottle on the list — and Garnacha from Rioja at this price point punches well above its weight. Dark fruit, a little spice, totally food-friendly across the whole tapas spread.
2020 Vinos Piñol, Raig de Raim, Terra Alta, Spain (Garnacha Blanca)
Most tables walk right past anything from Terra Alta, which is exactly why you shouldn't. Garnacha Blanca is an underdog white grape with real texture and personality — this is the kind of bottle that makes you put your phone down.
NV BarCava, Brut, Penedès, Spain
A 153% markup on a $15 retail Cava is a tough sell when you can find comparable house bubbles elsewhere for less. It's fine as a toast wine but you're paying a lot for convenience here — put that $38 toward a bottle of actual depth.
2019 Bodegas Lanzaga, LZ, Rioja, Spain (Tempranillo) + Spinach & Chickpea Cazuela
The LZ is an earthy, medium-weight Tempranillo with enough acidity to cut through the richness of the cazuela without bullying the dish. It's the kind of match that makes the food taste better and the wine taste more interesting — which is the whole point.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Barcelona Wine Bar Raleigh is a legitimately ambitious wine program dropped into a fun, casual tapas format — the depth is real and the by-the-glass program is genuinely worth exploring. Just know going in that several bottles carry steep markups, so shop the list carefully and lean toward the Iberian underdogs.
