Wingman Metrics
You walk into what looks like a classic Raleigh neighborhood haunt โ the kind of place where everybody knows everybody โ and then you notice the wine list has 100-plus bottles and a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence on the wall. That's the Players Retreat in a nutshell: unpretentious room, more serious wine program than you'd ever expect from a burger-and-beer joint.
The list leans hard into California and France, which tracks for an Award of Excellence recipient since 2020. You've got heavy-hitters like Caymus Cabernet, Jordan Cabernet, and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars anchoring the California side, while Louis Jadot holds down the Burgundy corner for the France contingent. Chateau Ste. Michelle rounds things out as an accessible Pacific Northwest entry point. The honest critique: the list skews safe and familiar โ Meiomi Pinot Noir and Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve are solid crowd-pleasers but aren't exactly pushing anybody's palate.
With 12 to 18 pours available by the glass, there's genuine flexibility here for the table that can't agree on a bottle. The range covers the California and French bases you'd expect, giving casual drinkers and more engaged guests something to work with. We'd love to see the rotation move more frequently, but for a neighborhood spot this size, the program holds up.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon โ $60
Jordan consistently punches above its price point โ structured, approachable, and recognizable enough that the whole table will be happy. At a neighborhood bar markup, this is the bottle to order without overthinking it.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars
Most people at a casual bar like this will reach for something they've heard of before. Stag's Leap has historic Napa pedigree that most PR regulars probably walk right past โ it's the sleeper pick on this list.
Meiomi Pinot Noir
Fine for what it is, but Meiomi is a grocery store bottle with a restaurant markup. You're at a Wine Spectator award-winning restaurant โ spend a little more and drink a little better.
Louis Jadot Burgundy + Chicken Gus
A classic Burgundy from Jadot is earthy and structured without being heavy โ it's got the kind of savory backbone that makes roasted or pan-prepared chicken sing without overpowering it.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
The Players Retreat is the Wild Card because nobody walks in expecting a legitimate wine program at a beloved Raleigh neighborhood bar โ and yet, here we are. Matt Fern keeps things credible, the California and French anchors are well-chosen, and as long as you steer past the grocery-store staples, you're drinking better than the room suggests.
