The list at Bar Purlieu is short enough to read twice before your water arrives, and that's a feature, not a bug. What's here is clearly chosen by someone who gives a damn โ Oregon Pinot, Loire Chenin, small Burgundy domaines โ not a Meiomi or a Josh in sight. It's the kind of list that makes you feel like the restaurant respects your time and your palate.
The backbone is Pacific Northwest Pinot Noir from boutique Willamette Valley producers, which makes sense given you're basically sitting inside wine country. Old World representation is lean but credible โ Loire Valley Chenin Blanc, a Bourgogne Rouge from a small domaine, and a Rioja Crianza round out a list that prioritizes terroir-focused producers over recognizable labels. There are gaps you'd expect from a small list โ no Italian depth, thin coverage below the Loire โ but nothing feels like filler. The occasional Grower Champagne by the glass is the kind of move that earns trust fast.
Six to ten pours on any given night, priced $11โ$15, with Grower Champagne making appearances that most neighborhood spots wouldn't even attempt. The range is tight but the hits are real โ Chenin Blanc and Willamette Pinot by the glass are both smart orders. We'd love to see more rotation, but what's here punches above its weight for a small Eugene bar.
Loire Valley Chenin Blanc โ $52
At $52 a bottle, this is the move. Chenin Blanc from the Loire is criminally underordered by most diners, which means you benefit from the lack of competition. It's complex, food-friendly with the charcuterie board, and the markup โ while not cheap โ is more defensible than what they're doing to the Rioja.
Grower Champagne (by the glass)
Most people walk past Grower Champagne at a neighborhood bar because they assume it's overpriced showboating. Here it's a by-the-glass pour, which almost never happens outside of dedicated wine bars. Order it. It's the most interesting thing on the list and a genuine statement of intent from whoever built this program.
Rioja Crianza Tempranillo
At $46 a bottle on an $18 retail wine, you're absorbing a 156% markup for something you could find at any Spanish restaurant in the country. The Rioja isn't bad โ Rioja Crianza is never bad โ but it's the least interesting bottle on the list and the worst value by a wide margin. Spend the extra $6 and drink the Chenin Blanc.
Bourgogne Rouge + Steak Tartare
A small-domaine Bourgogne Rouge has just enough acidity and earth to cut through the richness of raw beef without overwhelming the dish's delicacy. It's the kind of pairing that feels like it happened by accident but absolutely did not โ this is exactly why someone put both things on the same menu.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
Bar Purlieu is punching well above its weight class for Eugene, and the list is genuinely worth your attention even with the steep markups. We'd send a friend here for the Chenin and the Grower Champagne and tell them to skip the Rioja โ and they'd thank us for it.

B2 isn't trying to be a wine destination and doesn't need to be โ it's a neighborhood spot with a list that respects both the region and your wallet. Send a friend here and tell them to order the Owen Roe Syrah before someone else does.

Fuji is a genuinely fun night out โ the teppanyaki show is the main event and it delivers โ but the wine list is strictly an afterthought, with steep markups on uninspired brands and zero connection to the cuisine or the local Oregon wine scene. Order the Riesling or the plum wine, enjoy the fire, and don't overthink it.

Kirin isn't a wine destination and it doesn't pretend to be โ but the prices are fair and the Riesling with your General Tso's is a quiet win. Order accordingly and keep your expectations calibrated.

Makoto's wine list is exactly what it is โ a small, sensible selection built for a neighborhood Japanese spot that cares more about the food than the cellar. Order the Riesling, don't overthink it, and you'll leave happy.
