Jura Obsessives Built a Wine List in Atlanta

The wine list at Avize reads like it was curated by someone who just got back from a long drive through eastern France and couldn't stop talking about it. It's short, but every single bottle feels deliberate — no filler, no obvious crowd-pleasers dropped in to pad the count. For a cozy Swiss-cabin-vibes spot on Brady Ave, this is not the list you expect.
The geographic focus is tight but adventurous: Jura is clearly the spiritual home base, with Michel Gahier's 2019 Melon Arbois and a Philippe Vandelle Crémant anchoring the French section. There's a real commitment to the fringes of Europe — a Slovenian Pinot Grigio from Pullus, an Austrian Sauvignon Blanc from Sattlerhof in Südsteiermark, and a Barbera from Vigneti Massa in the Colli Tortonesi that most Atlanta diners won't recognize. Burgundy gets a nod with the Domaine Charles Père et Fille Pinot Noir from Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, and Bordeaux shows up in the form of Château Pas de l'Ane Saint-Émilion — a right-bank pick that leans more Cabernet Franc than most guests realize. The list is small enough that every bottle has a reason to be there, which is more than we can say for most restaurants three times its size.
Glass pour details weren't publicly available during our visit, which is the one real frustration here. A list this interesting deserves an active by-the-glass program that lets people take risks without committing to a full bottle — especially given the adventurous regional choices. We'd love to see the Crémant and the Gahier available by the pour.
2024 Pullus Pinot Grigio Stajerska Slovenia — null
Stajerska sits in the same geological belt as Friuli and Collio — this is the serious, mineral, dry-as-a-bone style of Pinot Grigio, not the watery supermarket stuff. It almost certainly punches well above whatever Avize charges for it, and it's a genuinely interesting pour.
2019 Michel Gahier Melon Arbois Jura France
Melon de Bourgogne grown in Jura is a niche within a niche — most people walk right past it for a Chardonnay or a Savagnin. Gahier is one of the best small producers in the appellation, and a 2019 with a few years of bottle age at a restaurant is a genuine find. If you don't order this, we'll be disappointed in you.
2020 Chateau Pas de L'Ane Merlot/Cabernet Franc Saint Emilion Bordeaux France
It's a perfectly fine Saint-Émilion, but it's also the most conventional, recognizable bottle on the list — and in a room full of Jura producers and Slovenian Pinot Grigio, ordering the Bordeaux feels like going to a great ramen spot and asking for the burger. Save it for another night.
2024 Weingut Sattlerhof Sauvignon Blanc Sudsteiermark Austria + Seared Scallops with Charcoaled Potato
Südsteiermark Sauvignon Blanc has a tension between ripe citrus and a cool, almost flinty edge that cuts through the richness of a seared scallop without blowing out the delicacy. The charcoal element in the potato actually plays against the wine's herbaceous notes in a way that makes both feel more interesting.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Avize is doing something genuinely rare in Atlanta: building a short wine list with actual conviction, pointed straight at the corners of Europe that deserve more attention. If you eat here and don't order something you've never heard of, you're doing it wrong.
· Atlanta · Contemporary American
By George is a fine place to drink wine if you know what you're walking into — a curated-but-safe list built for a stylish crowd that wants rosé and bubbles without friction. Come for the Crémant and the Tavel; don't expect to find anything that'll make you rethink your relationship with wine.

Nine Mile Station isn't a destination for wine nerds, but it's a perfectly decent place to drink something cold and recognizable while the Atlanta skyline does the heavy lifting. Come for the view, drink the Crémant, ignore the Rombauer.

· Atlanta · Wine Bar
Vin Atl is doing something most Atlanta wine bars aren't: curating a short list with genuine intention instead of padding it with safe bets. At these prices, it's worth a stop even if you only come for one bottle.

St. Julep is a place to drink wine, not a place to drink well. If you're here for the skyline and the scene, pour the rosé and enjoy it — just don't come expecting the list to surprise you.

BeltLine · Atlanta · Cocktail Bar with Kitchen
The James Room is a cocktail bar first and a wine destination never — but the list is competent enough to get you through a bottle without frustration. Come for the atmosphere, order the Cava or the Sancerre, and let the cocktail menu handle the heavy lifting.

· Atlanta · Spanish Tapas
Boqueria's wine list is a dependable, Spain-only program that mostly does right by the food — fair prices, solid producers, and enough range to keep the table happy across a long night of tapas. Don't come expecting discovery; do come expecting to drink well without your wallet taking a hit.
