Wingman Metrics
The name is going to make you roll your eyes or laugh — probably both — but once you get past the punny branding, there's a genuinely focused Virginia wine program here worth paying attention to. This is a winery's downtown outpost, which means the list is tight, intentional, and completely house-poured. No filler, no fuss.
Every bottle on this list is a Well Hung Vineyard production, which is either a feature or a bug depending on how you feel about single-producer wine bars. We'd call it a feature here: the lineup covers real ground, from a sparkling Chardonnay to a Petit Verdot Reserve to a Monticello-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown and made in Virginia. The Viognier Reserve is a smart nod to the grape that Virginia does better than almost anywhere else in the eastern U.S. The one gap is any old-world or comparative option — if you want Burgundy or Barolo, you're at the wrong bar.
With 15 wines and all 15 available by the glass, this is as by-the-glass-friendly as it gets — you can basically taste through the entire portfolio in one sitting if you pace yourself. Pours run $13–$17, which is fair for a wine bar in this market, especially given the regional focus and quality tier. No rotating guest pours or weekly specials that we could find, so the list is static but well-curated.
Well Hung Vineyard Shooting Blancs Sauvignon Blanc — $13/glass, $26/bottle
At $26 a bottle, this is one of the more approachable price points on the list and a solid example of what Virginia Sauvignon Blanc can do — crisp, food-friendly, and easy to commit to for a full evening.
Well Hung Vineyard Petit Verdot Reserve
Most people will reach for the Cabernet and call it a day, but Virginia has a real thing going with Petit Verdot — it ripens reliably in the climate and delivers big structure and dark fruit. Most guests overlook it, which means more for the rest of us.
Well Hung Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
At $17/glass or $49/bottle, this is the priciest pour on the list, and while the Monticello designation is a legitimate credential, you're paying a premium for the flagship label when the Petit Verdot Reserve next to it is more interesting and easier on the wallet.
Well Hung Vineyard Qué Syrah Syrah + Shrimp and Grits
Virginia Syrah has a savory, peppery edge that cuts right through the richness of a Southern-style shrimp and grits — it's the kind of pairing that makes both the food and the wine punch above their weight.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Well Hung Vineyard Roanoke is a genuinely fun, no-pretense stop for anyone curious about what Virginia wine is doing right now — the branding is a lot, but the pours back it up. Send a friend here if they think Virginia wine is a punchline; they'll leave thinking otherwise.

TGI Friday's Roanoke is a fine place to grab a beer or a Jack and Coke, but the wine program is a corporate afterthought with steep markups on bottom-shelf bottles. Order a cocktail, save the wine for somewhere that gives a damn.

Shakers isn't a wine destination — it's a reliable neighborhood spot where the wine program does its job without drama. If you're here for ribs and a casual pour, you'll leave satisfied; just don't show up expecting discovery.

Abuelo's wine list exists to check a box, not to enhance your dinner — stick to the cocktails and revisit this list never. If someone at your table insists on wine, go Joel Gott and call it a night.

The markups are honest and the Mollydooker pour is a genuine saving grace, but this list exists to check a corporate box, not to help you drink well. Order the Mollydooker with your steak, skip any bottle over $40, and keep your expectations calibrated to the Bloomin' Onion energy of the room.

The Pine Room is a great spot for a drink and a burger in a handsome historic room, but the wine list is an afterthought in a state with a legitimate wine culture worth showcasing. Order a cocktail or ask for whatever's on tap, and don't make a trip here specifically for the wine.

Chambers is doing something genuinely worthwhile for the Charleston, WV wine scene: a real list, real staff knowledge, and a clear point of view. It won't blow the doors off a seasoned wine traveler, but as a neighborhood wine bar, it's the kind of place you'd actually send a friend — especially if that friend would otherwise be drinking house Merlot out of a cavernous goblet somewhere else.
