Wingman Metrics
You're on the roof of the historic Hotel Alex Johnson, staring at Rapid City's skyline with the Black Hills punching up in the distance β and honestly, that view does a lot of heavy lifting. The wine list isn't going to blow anyone's mind on paper, but it's more considered than you'd expect from a rooftop cocktail bar in South Dakota. Someone here cares at least a little.
The list leans heavily California and Paso Robles, which tracks for a room that wants to please without challenging. You've got approachable crowd favorites like the Pessimist Red Blend and J. Lohr Pure Paso doing the bulk of the work, and they do it fine. What's genuinely interesting is the inclusion of Domaine D'Aupilhac Lou Maset from Languedoc-Roussillon β a serious, terroir-driven southern French red that has no business being this far into Middle America, but here we are. Washington State gets a nod in the mix, though the list doesn't go deep into any region. Gaps exist: minimal sparkling, thin on whites beyond the obvious suspects.
Eight to fourteen by-the-glass options is a reasonable spread for the format, and the pours skew toward the accessible end of the spectrum β think big California reds and safe whites that work for a crowd that came here for the view first and wine second. We'd love to see the Lou Maset by the glass, but don't hold your breath. The real move here is the bottle program, especially on Sundays.
Domaine D'Aupilhac Lou Maset Languedoc Rouge β Unknown β confirm on-site
On a Sunday with Cellar Sundays running, this bottle at 50% off is almost absurdly good value. Aupilhac is a respected Languedoc producer making wines from old-vine Syrah and Grenache blends that punch well above their weight. This is the bottle you order when everyone else is drinking Pessimist.
Domaine D'Aupilhac Lou Maset Languedoc Rouge
Most people at a rooftop bar in Rapid City are reaching for the California red blend they already know. The Lou Maset is the quiet outlier on this list β a garrigue-scented southern French red from a house that takes its terroir seriously. It's the one wine here that makes you wonder who built this list.
Pessimist Pessimist Red Blend
Fine wine, broadly available, and almost certainly marked up to rooftop-view pricing. You can grab this at a Total Wine for $20 and change. At bar markup in a high-foot-traffic tourist destination, the value math doesn't work in your favor unless it's Sunday.
J. Lohr Pure Paso Proprietary Red + Flatbread
Pure Paso is a big, ripe Paso Robles blend built for exactly this kind of situation β something bold and fruit-forward to stand up to savory flatbread toppings without requiring you to think too hard about it. Easy win on a rooftop when the wind picks up and the sun goes down.
Sunday β Cellar Sundays: 50% off all bottles every Sunday from 4PM to close. Also, Wine Wednesday offers 20% off select bottled wine.
π² The Bottom Line
Vertex isn't a wine destination and it knows it β but the Cellar Sundays deal is legitimately one of the better wine promotions we've seen at this type of venue, and the Lou Maset on the list is a genuine surprise. Come for the view, stay for a Sunday bottle you didn't expect to find in downtown Rapid City.
North Rapid City Β· Rapid City Β· Hotel Lounge
Timbers Lounge is a place to have a drink after a long drive to Mount Rushmore, not a destination for wine. Order a cocktail or a beer and save your wine energy for somewhere that's put in the work.

Central Rapid City Β· Rapid City Β· Mexican
Mi Mexico is not a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be β order a margarita, enjoy your meal, and don't expect the wine list to surprise you. If you absolutely must have wine with your tacos, the Sangria is $6.25 and nobody will judge you.

East Rapid City Β· Rapid City Β· Steakhouse
LongHorn Rapid City is exactly what it is β a reliable chain steakhouse with a wine list that was built by committee and hasn't changed much since. If you're here for the steak, you'll be fine; just aim for the Joel Gott and don't expect the staff to talk you through it.

There is no version of this wine list that warrants a special trip or even a deliberate order β it's a functional corporate program designed to move bottles, not to impress. If you're at Outback for the steak, grab the Alamos Malbec and call it a night; if wine actually matters to you, this is a cocktail dinner.

This is a wine list that exists purely because restaurants are expected to have one. Don't come to Applebee's for wine β but if you're already here and you need a glass, the Mondavi Cab won't embarrass you.

Red Lobster Rapid City's wine list exists to check a box, not to enhance your meal. Order the Riesling if you must, but honestly, a cocktail or a cold draft will serve you better here.
