Walking into Tuscarora Mill β a converted 19th-century grain mill with exposed brick and soaring ceilings β the wine list feels like it belongs somewhere fancier, and that's a compliment. It's a 150-plus bottle list that covers serious ground without taking itself too seriously. For Leesburg, Virginia, this is a genuine surprise.
The list earns its Wine Spectator Award of Excellence (held since 2019) by doing three things well: California, France, and Virginia. You get the Napa hits β Stag's Leap, Jordan, Cakebread, Far Niente β alongside solid Burgundy representation from Louis Jadot and Joseph Drouhin, and RhΓ΄ne credibility via Chapoutier and Guigal. What really sets Tuskies apart is the Virginia section: RdV Vineyards, Boxwood Estate, and Barboursville all show up, giving the list a local identity that most restaurants in this region completely ignore. Bordeaux is there too, including ChΓ’teau Margaux for the big spenders, though that $850 price tag is firmly in splurge-or-skip territory. The gaps are in emerging regions β no skin-contact wines, no South America to speak of β but the core is strong.
With 15-25 pours on the glass list, there's genuine range here β enough to work through a meal without repeating yourself. We'd love to see more Virginia bottles represented in the BTG lineup, since that's where the list earns its personality. Rotation isn't aggressive, but the program is active enough to reward repeat visits.
Barboursville Octagon 2018 β $98
Barboursville's flagship Bordeaux-style blend is one of Virginia's most serious wines, and $98 is a fair ask at a restaurant table. You're drinking a wine that competes with bottles costing twice as much from Napa β and you're supporting one of the state's historic producers while doing it. Order this and feel good about it.
Domaine Serene Pinot Noir 2020
Most tables at Tuskies are going straight for the Napa Cabs or the Burgundy, so this Oregon Pinot tends to get overlooked. Domaine Serene is a serious producer, and the 2020 vintage held up well. It's the move if you want something elegant and food-friendly that won't compete with what's on your plate.
ChΓ’teau Margaux 2018
At $850 on a restaurant list, you're paying a steep premium for a trophy wine in a casual historic mill. The Margaux is spectacular β that's never in question β but this is a bottle best enjoyed at home or at a destination restaurant built around a cellar experience. There are better ways to spend $850 here.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon + Braised Lamb Shank
Jordan's Alexander Valley Cab is built for exactly this kind of situation: classic, polished, just enough structure to stand up to the richness of a long-braised shank without overwhelming it. It's the restaurant equivalent of a clean handoff.
Tuesday β Half-price wine night every Tuesday β the best reason to eat out mid-week in Loudoun County.
π² The Bottom Line
Tuscarora Mill is the kind of place you'd be happy to stumble into and happier to plan around β a legitimately good wine list in a beautiful setting, with a Virginia section that gives the list a real sense of place. Show up on a Tuesday and drink very well for the money.
