Walking into Echelon in historic downtown Leesburg, you're not expecting a wine list that holds its own against serious city wine bars — and that's exactly what makes it a Wild Card. The rustic modern room signals approachable, but the list signals ambition. Wine Spectator has had their eye on this place since 2022, and it's not hard to see why.

With 150-250 bottles anchored by France, Virginia, California, and Oregon, Echelon punches well above its small-town-wine-bar weight class. Domaine Leflaive and Louis Jadot cover the Burgundy bases with real credibility, while Ridge Vineyards and Jordan round out California without defaulting to the usual grocery store suspects. The Virginia section is the real story here — RdV Vineyards and Barboursville aren't just token local gestures, they're genuinely exciting bottles that most wine lists outside the DMV wouldn't bother stocking. Domaine Drouhin and Lingua Franca bring Oregon into the fold and give the Pacific Northwest contingent something to cheer about.

Twenty to thirty-five pours by the glass is generous for a room this size, and the $12-$18 range keeps things accessible without feeling like a race to the bottom. The real win here is that the by-the-glass program actually reflects the depth of the bottle list — you're not stuck choosing between two anonymous Chardonnays while the good stuff sits behind a price wall.
