Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Truffles arrives with the kind of heft you don't expect in a college town — this isn't a laminated single-page afterthought. California, France, Italy, and the Pacific Northwest all have real representation, and the price ceiling pushes past $150, which tells you they're at least trying to play in a bigger league.
The backbone is exactly what you'd expect from a New American fine dining spot: Napa Cabs, Provence rosé, northern Italian whites, and a nod to French classics. The Faust Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018 anchors the red side and is a legitimate step up from the usual crowd-pleaser Cabs that clutter lists like this. The Italian white presence — represented by Ruffino's Il Ducale Pinot Grigio from Friuli — is functional but not adventurous. We'd love to see more Burgundy depth or an Oregon Pinot section, but for Bloomington, this is a real list.
Ten to twenty glass pours is a solid offering for this market, with prices running $9–$20 — reasonable enough that you won't feel punished for ordering a second glass. The Chateau Peyrassol 'La Croix' Rosé at $12 a glass is the standout BTG option; Peyrassol is a name that earns its spot on serious lists. The Bonvia Moscato at $9 is the obvious crowd-pleaser anchor for the sweeter palate crowd.
Faust Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018 — $49
At a carryout promo price that's actually below retail, this is the clearest no-brainer on the list. Faust is Quintessa's second label — structured, dark-fruited Napa Cab that normally commands a stiff restaurant premium. Getting it near retail is rare.
Chateau Peyrassol 'La Croix' Rosé Provence 2020
Most tables overlook the rosé at a fine dining spot, assuming it's a throwaway pour. Peyrassol is a serious Provence producer with a 700-year estate history — this isn't a beach-house sipper, it's a genuinely crafted wine that most diners will breeze past on their way to the Cab.
Ruffino Il Ducale Pinot Grigio Friuli 2018
A $12 retail bottle poured at $12 a glass sounds fine until you realize you're paying bottle price for a single pour. Ruffino is reliable grocery-store territory — there's nothing wrong with the wine, but at this math, you're not getting a deal, you're getting a default.
Chateau Peyrassol 'La Croix' Rosé Provence 2020 + Pan-seared scallops
Provence rosé and seared seafood is a classic pairing for a reason — the wine's bright acidity and subtle minerality cut through the caramelized crust without bullying the delicate sweetness of the scallop.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Truffles is doing more with wine than anywhere else in Bloomington, and the pricing is honest enough that you won't need to steel yourself before opening the list. It's not a destination wine program, but for a night out in Indiana, it's the right call.
Downtown Bloomington · Bloomington · Eclectic Cafe / Breakfast & Brunch
Come to the Runcible Spoon for the atmosphere, the eggs, and the coffee — the wine list is an afterthought and the restaurant knows it. If you need something in a glass, the Graffigna Malbec won't embarrass you, but don't build your evening around the wine program.

West Side · Bloomington · American / Comfort Food
Cheddar's Bloomington is a perfectly fine place to eat a big plate of comfort food, but the wine program is an afterthought at best and a quiet ripoff at worst. Order a cocktail, order a beer, or bring your own if they allow it — just don't come here expecting wine to be part of the night.

La Una Cantina is a genuinely fun night out — order the mezcal, order the tacos, and don't overthink the wine list because the restaurant clearly didn't. If wine is your thing, this is a cocktail night.

Downtown · Bloomington · Turkish / Mediterranean
Anatolia is a Wild Card not because the list is adventurous top to bottom — it's mostly not — but because a Turkish restaurant in a college town with 27 glass pours, a Gigondas, a Jadot Pouilly Fuissé, and an actual Turkish wine from Kavaklidere is doing something more interesting than the Caymus-heavy lineup suggests. Come for the food, skip the safe American blockbusters, and let the Kavaklidere or Gigondas do the heavy lifting.

Downtown · Bloomington · Indian (Northern and Southern), Halal-friendly
Taste of India is clearly beloved for its food, and it should be — but the wine list is an afterthought that no one has revisited in a while. Order a mango lassi, a Kingfisher if they have it, or save the wine for a restaurant that's actually trying.

East Side · Bloomington · Japanese (sushi, hibachi, and classic Japanese dishes)
Mori is swinging bigger on wine than any casual Japanese spot in Bloomington has a right to, and we respect the effort. The markups and the California-red tunnel vision hold it back from being a destination wine stop, but if you're already there for sushi, there's a genuinely interesting bottle or two worth finding.

MSU Campus / East Lansing · Lansing · Fine Dining / New American
The State Room is a reliable, inoffensive wine program that serves its audience — hotel guests, university events, and MSU parents — without asking too much of anyone. You won't discover your next favorite producer here, but you also won't feel ripped off, and that's more than you can say for a lot of hotel dining rooms.

The White Linen is a legitimate fine dining option in Topeka with a wine list that has real moments — the Cornas alone is worth the trip. Just watch the markups on the commodity pours, skip the Coppola Cab entirely, and you'll drink well.

Wild Sage is a reliable fine dining wine list in a genuinely beautiful setting — the kind of place where the wine won't let you down, even if it won't surprise you. If you're in Jackson Hole and want a serious bottle with a serious meal, this is your spot; just go in knowing you're paying mountain resort prices.
