Eight labels is not a lot — but when one of them is Jean-Paul Brun and another is Champalou, someone in that building knows what they're doing. The list is lean by design, not by neglect, and that's a meaningful distinction in a mountain-town tavern.
The list punches above its weight class by skipping the usual Cali-Cab-and-Pinot-Grigio trap and reaching into Burgundy and the Loire. Jean-Paul Brun's 'Charme' Chardonnay from Beaujolais Blanc is a genuinely interesting choice — clean, mineral-driven, and nothing like the buttery bombs most places pour at this price point. Champalou's Vouvray Brut is the kind of sparkling wine that shows up on lists at restaurants that actually care. The California side leans Mendocino and Sonoma rather than Napa, which keeps things grounded and the prices honest. The gap is obvious — eight bottles is eight bottles, and if none of them land for you, you're drinking cocktails.
Somewhere between six and eight pours depending on the night, which is a reasonable ratio for a list this size. The Casalforte Prosecco and Liwa Sauvignon Blanc handle the casual end of the room, while the Champalou gives you a proper glass of sparkling wine if you know to ask for it. No dedicated BTG rotation program here — what's on the list is what's in your glass.
Jean-Paul Brun 'Charme' Chardonnay, NV, Burgundy — N/A (bottle price not confirmed in available data)
Brun's Charme is one of the most honest Chardonnays you can find at a restaurant — unoaked, precise, and made by a producer who actually gives a damn. Finding it in a Truckee tavern is a small miracle. Order it before the wood-fired steak arrives and you'll be glad you did.
Champalou Chenin Blanc Brut, NV, Vouvray
Most tables at a place like this are going to default to whatever Prosecco is on the menu. Don't. Champalou is a benchmark Loire producer and their Brut is taut, appley, and genuinely satisfying — not just 'bubbles.' It's the kind of wine that makes people ask what they're drinking.
Pinot Grigio (producer unlisted)
When a wine list this small can't be bothered to name the producer on the Pinot Grigio, that's a signal. It's almost certainly fine — and almost certainly the most forgettable thing you could order. With Champalou and Brun sitting right there on the same list, there's no reason to go anonymous.
Novy Syrah, Sonoma County + Wood-fired steak
Novy's Sonoma Syrah has enough dark fruit and pepper to stand up to char and beef fat without steamrolling the plate. It's a California Syrah that leans savory rather than jammy, which is exactly what you want when your food came out of a wood fire.
The Bottom Line
Truckee Tavern isn't a wine destination, but it's a wine-respecting one — and in a ski-town tavern doing $30 entrees, that's worth showing up for. Go in knowing the list is short, order the Champalou or the Brun, and enjoy the fire.

Como Truckee is clearly a food-forward restaurant that hasn't put the same energy into its wine program. Six labels is a hard ask when you're building a full Mediterranean meal around it. If you're a wine person, drink with low expectations or call ahead about corkage.

Truckee River Winery earns its Wild Card badge not because the list is adventurous in the traditional sense, but because finding a family-owned winery tasting room with legitimate California vineyard sourcing tucked into a ski-and-river town is genuinely unexpected. If you're passing through Truckee and want something more interesting than a resort bar pour, this is your move — just come in ready to drink their stuff on their terms.

Petra is the wine list you don't expect to find at 6,000 feet next to a ski lift, and that surprise is worth something real. Cottonwood's wine program is a by-the-glass-only affair, but whoever built this list has taste — a Loire Muscadet, a Tempranillo, and a natural California red don't end up together by accident. If you're skiing into Truckee and want something more considered than the usual resort pour, this is a solid stop. Don't come expecting a deep cellar; do come knowing the glass options are genuinely worth ordering.

Moody's is the kind of place that earns a second look the moment you see Tablas Creek rosé and a Cru Beaujolais on the same all-glass list in a mountain town. The program is compact but clearly curated by someone who cares, and the pricing is fair enough that you won't feel punished for ordering well. If you're passing through Truckee, this is worth a stop for the wine alone.

Stella is quietly running one of the more serious wine lists in the Truckee-Tahoe corridor, anchored by a sparkling section that would hold its own in a San Francisco wine bar and priced without the mountain-town surcharge you might expect. We don't know enough about the service experience or the glass program to call it a Rager, but as a Wild Card — a tasting menu spot in ski country with actual wine ambition — it earns the badge. If you're headed up the mountain, this is the list worth planning around.
