Wingman Metrics
You open the wine list at a neighborhood Italian trattoria in Bridgeport expecting Pinot Grigio and Chianti — and instead you get Taurasi DOCG, Gaglioppo from Calabria, and Cannonau Riserva from Sardinia. We did a double take. This list has a point of view, and that point of view is: the South of Italy is underrated and we're going to prove it.
Fifty-seven labels sounds modest until you realize almost none of them are phoning it in. The backbone of the list is a serious tour through Campania — two Irpinia Aglianicos from Terredora and Donnachiara, plus Taurasi DOCG from both Tenuta Scuotto and Donnachiara — anchored by a Mastroberardino Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio that most restaurants would never bother to stock. Puglia gets a thorough Leone De Castris showcase across four different labels, Calabria shows up with a Statti Gaglioppo, and Sardinia holds its own with a Santadi Carignano and a Cantina Dorgali Cannonau Riserva. Piemonte gets its due at the top end, from a solid Fontanabianca Barbaresco and a Rivera Barolo all the way up to Gaja — but the real story here is everything south of Rome.
Two options by the glass at $10 flat — we don't know exactly what's pouring, but at that price point we're not complaining. The near-total lack of a by-the-glass program is the list's biggest miss; with this much interesting juice on the bottle side, a rotating glass pour selection would elevate the whole experience dramatically.
Tormaresca Neprica IGT 2017 — $38
Tormaresca is a Puglia operation backed by Antinori, and the Neprica — a Primitivo-Negroamaro-Cabernet blend — punches well above its price. At $38 you're getting serious southern Italian structure without paying serious southern Italian prices.
Statti Gaglioppo IGT 2016
Gaglioppo is Calabria's native red grape and it almost never shows up on American wine lists. Statti is one of the region's most respected producers, and at $40 this is a genuine conversation piece — earthy, bright, and nothing like what the table next to you is drinking.
Gaja Barolo DOCG 2017
Gaja Barolo at $150 is actually not an outrageous restaurant markup on paper, but you're here at a Bridgeport trattoria with a Taurasi DOCG and a Cannonau Riserva within arm's reach for a fraction of the price. Save the Gaja flex for a different occasion.
Donnachiara Taurasi DOCG 2017 + Braised lamb or slow-cooked meat pasta
Taurasi is Campania's big red — Aglianico at its most structured and serious. It wants something with weight and fat to soften its grip. A rich braised lamb or a Sunday-style meat ragù gives it exactly what it's asking for.
The Bottom Line
This is a sleeper hit of a wine list — a neighborhood Italian spot that clearly cares about where its bottles come from and keeps the prices honest. If you have even a passing curiosity about southern Italian reds, 'A Vucchella is worth the trip.

Sorrento is doing something genuinely worth paying attention to in a city not known for wine bars — a 20-glass list anchored in Italian producers, priced fairly, and accessible enough to drink through the whole menu. Send your wine-curious friends here; they'll leave more interested in Barbera and Falanghina than when they walked in.

Barcelona Wine Bar Fairfield has built a sparkling wine program that punches way above what you'd expect from a suburban tapas chain — the cava and Corpinnat depth is legitimately impressive. Come for the bubbles, stay for the jamón.

Matto is the kind of neighborhood wine bar Bridgeport deserves — fair prices, a genuinely open-minded list with Italian backbone, and enough by-the-glass options that you're never stuck. It's not a destination, but it's absolutely worth a stop.

Ralph 'n Rich's wine list does exactly what it's supposed to do for a classic downtown steakhouse — it keeps the regulars happy and doesn't embarrass anyone at a business dinner. Just steer toward the Italian bottles and away from the California marquee names, and you'll drink well enough.

Vazzy's wine list does exactly what it needs to do for a waterfront Italian banquet spot: it keeps the crowd happy, offers a few real bottles worth ordering, and doesn't embarrass itself. Just steer clear of the obvious California picks and head straight for the Italian reds — that's where this list earns its keep.

Francesca's Passaggio is a dependable suburban Italian wine list — white-wine-heavy, Italian-accented, and priced on the steeper side, but with enough interesting bottles to reward a little menu exploration. Send a friend here if they want a pleasant, fuss-free dinner with a solid glass of something Italian; send a serious wine person elsewhere.
