Wingman Metrics
Walk into TJ Oyster Bar and wine is clearly the last thing on anyone's mind — and honestly, that's fine. The focus is on the mariscos, the chaos, and the fish tacos. The wine list exists mostly as an afterthought, a short row of house options wedged between the beer and the agua fresca.
The list is about as stripped-down as it gets: house Chardonnay, house Sauvignon Blanc, and house Cabernet Sauvignon. No producers named, no regions called out beyond a vague California umbrella, no vintage information anywhere. There are no surprises here and no depth — this is a wine program designed to check a box, not to make anyone's night. If you came hoping to find a crisp Albariño to go with your ceviche tostada, you're going to be disappointed.
Every wine on the list appears to be available by the glass, which is the only format that makes sense for a counter-order mariscos spot. Happy hour Monday through Thursday from 3 to 5 PM drops all house pours to $5, which is genuinely hard to argue with. Outside of that window, pricing isn't published, so you're going in a little blind.
House Sauvignon Blanc — $5
At $5 during happy hour, it's the most logical match for anything acidic and seafood-forward on the menu. Sauv Blanc's natural citrus edge does the most work here, and at that price, you're not overthinking it.
House Sauvignon Blanc
Most people grabbing a drink at a mariscos counter reach for a beer or a michelada — which is fair. But the house Sauvignon Blanc at happy hour pricing is an underused move with ceviche tostadas. Nobody orders it, and that's their loss.
House Cabernet Sauvignon
A house Cab at a seafood counter makes almost no sense. There's nothing on this menu it's designed for, and without knowing the producer or markup, you're paying for a mystery red that has no business being near a shrimp taco.
House Sauvignon Blanc + Ceviche Tostadas
Ceviche's lime-forward acid and fresh seafood need a wine that doesn't fight back — Sauvignon Blanc's brightness matches the citrus and keeps the whole thing clean. It's not a complicated pairing, but it works.
❌ The Bottom Line
TJ Oyster Bar is a legitimately great mariscos spot where the wine program is purely incidental. Come for the fish tacos and shrimp, grab a $5 house Sauv Blanc at happy hour if you want wine, and don't expect anything more than that.
La Jolla / Torrey Pines · Chula Vista · Regional California Cuisine / American Fine Dining
A.R. Valentien is doing something rare for a hotel restaurant: it's built a wine program that would stand on its own even without the Pacific Ocean views. Send your people here — just book ahead and don't skip the wine list.

La Jolla · Chula Vista · Italian
Marisi is a reliable Italian wine list with genuine ambition hiding behind a steep markup structure — the producers are right, the regions are right, but you'll pay for the privilege. Go for the Produttori Barbaresco and the Pre-Phylloxera Barbera, and you'll leave satisfied.

Nine-Ten is a genuinely good restaurant with a competent wine program — the sommelier is present, the list is legitimate, and the setting earns the price of admission. But the markups are aggressive enough that you'll want to be selective, because this list can eat your wallet if you reach for the obvious names.

Gaslamp Quarter · Chula Vista · Modern Steakhouse / Contemporary American
STK San Diego is a perfectly functional steakhouse wine list — it does exactly what it promises and absolutely nothing more. Come for the atmosphere and the beef, lean into happy hour if wine value matters to you, and don't show up expecting to be surprised.

Stake is the real deal — a 1,700-bottle list with genuine sommelier guidance and a kitchen that integrates wine into the experience rather than just selling it alongside. The pricing is steep, because this is Coronado and this is a serious steakhouse, but if you're already ordering a $75 Wagyu, the cellar absolutely earns its place at the table.

Callie is one of the most intentional wine programs in San Diego — curated, regionally coherent, and staffed by people who actually know what's in the cellar. The markups will cost you, but if you're going to spend, this is a list worth spending on.
