Wingman Metrics
The Tobacco Company has Richmond history baked into its walls, and the wine list feels about as aged as the building — not in a cellar-treasure way, just in a 'nobody's rocked the boat lately' way. You know immediately this list was built to offend no one, which means it won't thrill anyone either. That said, the price ceiling of $60 a bottle is a pleasant surprise for a room this storied.
Twelve bottles cover the globe in the most familiar way possible: Sonoma Chardonnay, Willamette Pinot Noir, Paso Robles Cab, Mendoza Malbec — it's the greatest hits collection on every mid-range American restaurant list. The bright spots are the Dr. Loosen Riesling from the Middle Mosel and the Bodega Lanzaga Corriente Rioja, both of which actually require someone to care. Beyond those two, the list skews heavily California with a Provence rosé and a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc tossed in for the 'I don't do red' crowd. There are no real surprises here, no deep regional cuts, and nothing that suggests a wine buyer with an agenda — but everything is competent and from recognizable producers.
Eleven by-the-glass options at $8–$15 is a solid count for a list this size, and the range actually mirrors the bottle list pretty faithfully. You're not getting poured from some forgotten open bottle that's been sitting since Thursday — the pour selection is recent vintage and identifiable. Don't expect rotation or anything chef-driven; this BTG program is as static as the décor.
Bodega Lanzaga Corriente Rioja 2021 — $32
Lanzaga is Telmo Rodriguez's project in Rioja — serious pedigree at a price that makes you do a double-take. At the low end of the bottle range, this is easily the most interesting wine on the list for the money.
Dr. Loosen Riesling 2022
Most people at a place like this reach for the Chardonnay or the Cab without blinking. The Dr. Loosen from Bernkastel is a legitimately great producer making expressive, food-friendly Riesling — and it'll get passed over every single night by guests who don't know what they're missing.
Duckhorn Decoy Chardonnay 2022
Decoy is Duckhorn's entry-level label, built for volume, and it shows up on every restaurant list in America at a markup that doesn't reflect what's actually in the glass. You can grab this at any grocery store for less than you'll pay here, and there are better picks on this very list.
Figuiere Mediterranee Rose 2023 + Any lighter seafood or charcuterie starter on the menu
Provence rosé exists precisely for moments like this — a historic dining room, warm lighting, something light on the table to start. The Figuiere is dry, structured, and won't compete with delicate flavors the way a heavier pour would.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Tobacco Company wine list is what it is: reliable, fairly priced, and unlikely to make you regret the bottle you ordered. If you spot the Rioja or the Loosen Riesling, grab them — those two alone justify a closer look at the list than this room usually gets.

Lillian is the rare spot where the wine list is more ambitious than the address suggests — a focused, France-and-Italy-forward program with legit producers, a knowledgeable floor lead, and bottle prices that don't feel punitive. Send a friend here, tell them to sit at the counter, order oysters, and ask PJ what's open.

The Boathouse is a reliable choice if you time it right — hit that 4–6pm happy hour and suddenly the steep markups become a non-issue. Outside of that window, you're paying a premium for the view as much as the wine, which is fine as long as you go in knowing that.

Oby Brush has a wine list with a genuine point of view — small, focused, and clearly assembled by someone who reads more than a distributor's sales sheet. The markup keeps it from being a destination purely for wine, but as a companion to whatever's happening in the room, it more than holds its own.

The Vault is doing exactly what a neighborhood restaurant wine list is supposed to do — keep prices honest and put something drinkable in front of every type of guest. It won't make a wine lover's shortlist, but it won't embarrass anyone either.
