The wine list at Shagbark lands like a quiet flex β no gimmicks, no filler, just a tightly curated 250-to-400-bottle program that means business. For a seasonal New American spot tucked into a Richmond suburb, this is not what you're expecting. Wine Spectator has had its eye on this list since 2022, and one look at the producers tells you exactly why.
France and California anchor the list with real conviction: Domaine Leflaive shows up for Burgundy lovers, ChΓ’teau Rayas and Chapoutier cover the RhΓ΄ne with authority, and the Italian section leans into the heavy hitters with Giacomo Conterno and Bruno Giacosa representing Barolo at its most serious. California brings the heat too β Sine Qua Non and Arnot-Roberts on the same list is the kind of combination that makes wine people do a double take. Oregon gets its moment with Domaine Drouhin, and Kistler's Cheyenne Camp Chardonnay slots in as the kind of California white that earns its price tag. The $50-to-$150 sweet spot is genuinely well-stocked, meaning you don't have to reach for the stars to drink well here.
Twenty to thirty-five by-the-glass options is an unusually generous pour program for a restaurant at this level β most places with lists this serious cut the BTG count and push bottles. The selection rotates with the seasons, which means what's in the glass actually reflects what's on the plate. If Zach Angel, Robert Pence, or Ben Brown are working the floor, ask them what just opened β they tend to pour from interesting places.
Arnot-Roberts β $50-$80 range
Arnot-Roberts consistently punches above its price point β precise, food-friendly California wine from producers who actually care about balance over extraction. On a list with Sine Qua Non and Domaine Leflaive, this is the pick that lets you drink extremely well without the sticker shock.
Chapoutier RhΓ΄ne Valley
Most tables at Shagbark are going Burgundy or California, which means the RhΓ΄ne Valley selections from Chapoutier sit quietly underordered. That's a mistake. Chapoutier's biodynamic approach produces wines with real texture and longevity β and they work hard against the wood-fired and roasted proteins that define Shagbark's menu.
Sine Qua Non
Sine Qua Non is genuinely great wine β no argument there β but it's also the kind of bottle that gets marked up aggressively everywhere it appears. Unless you're celebrating something specific, the money goes further elsewhere on this list. The cult premium is real and the restaurant knows it.
Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir + House-made pasta
Drouhin Oregon splits the difference between Old World restraint and New World fruit in a way that makes it genuinely versatile at the table. Against a rich, butter-finished house pasta, that Willamette Valley Pinot cuts through without overpowering β it's the kind of pairing that makes both the wine and the dish taste better.
π₯ The Bottom Line
Shagbark is the real deal β a legitimately serious wine program attached to a kitchen that can back it up, priced fairly enough that you'll actually want to explore. If you're in Richmond and you care about what's in your glass, this is the room you should be in.

The Boathouse is a reliable choice if you time it right β hit that 4β6pm happy hour and suddenly the steep markups become a non-issue. Outside of that window, you're paying a premium for the view as much as the wine, which is fine as long as you go in knowing that.
